Peter Gebhardt Obituary

KENWOOD >> Peter John Gebhardt, 60, of Kenwood, N.Y. passed away Tuesday morning April 4, 2017 at the Oneida Extended Care Facility after a difficult battle with cancer.

Peter was born on April 26, 1956 at the US Naval Hospital in Queens, N.Y., the son of John Ellsworth Gebhardt and Nola Noyes Paquette. He was the great-grandson of John Humphrey Noyes.

A graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School in the class of 1974, Peter was employed by Oneida Ltd. for 34 years where he enjoyed experiences in warehouse management, marketing and procurement. His title at the close of his career with Oneida was Director of Global Forecasting. Following his career with Oneida Ltd., Peter launched his own business in 2009 as a Luthier, creating custom instruments for professional musicians around the world.

The most precious thing for Peter was his daughter Bianka. Sharing his love with her made his life complete. He had a terrific eye for design, collecting fine art, furniture, Artisan Ceramics and 20th century Sequential Art. Peter was a very accomplished craftsman, creating fine furniture as well as the personal renovation and conservation of the three homes he owned in Kenwood.

Peter was an active volunteer, worked with the Mansion House Historical Preservation Committee, and served as trustee and board member for the Oneida Community Mansion House, OCMH.

He is survived by his mother Nola Desimone, daughter Bianka Paige Gebhardt, brother Paul Ellsworth Gebhardt and sister-in-law Amy Stone Gebhardt, all from Oneida, and by his aunt and uncle, Adele and Leslie Mitchell, Rochester, along with many cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 2 p.m. at The Mansion House, 170 Kenwood Ave. Oneida, N.Y. followed by an informal reception.

A special thank you to Dr. Rathika Martyn for the thoughtfulness, compassion and care she provided. Many thanks to the staff of the ECF for providing attention, comfort and care to Peter.

Donations in his memory can be made to Oneida Community Mansion House, 170 Kenwood Ave., Oneida, N.Y. 13421.

I used to call on Pete in the late 90's while he was in procurement with Oneida Ltd. I don't know what prompted me to look him up years later to see what he was up to but by doing so, I just learned of his passing and am saddened by this news. Pete was always so nice to me and treated me with the utmost of professionalism but at the same time we shared a lot of laughs together. My condolences to the family and I was honored and humbles to have known him.

I just wrote to Peter, not knowing about his passing.
Only when it came back to me and I did a search for him did I learn the news, which I'm incredibly sad about.
He was a lovely person, incredibly talented.
I own two of his guitars.
One is his creation, the other, a very enjoyable collaboration. Both highly unusual, gorgeous instruments.
In the years I knew him, we never met, we spoke on the phone a handful of times and emailed quite a bit.
He never mentioned he was ill.
He did go on, at great legnth, about his daughter, who I could tell was his absolute pride & joy.
I could relate his love for her to my daughter.
We really connected over this.
I hope she reads this, although I'm sure she knows she was the center of his world.
And his guitars were played by me around the world on stage with Roger Waters & David Gilmour.
I'm only saying that not to brag, but in case she likes the music, she can add that to her many reasons to be proud of him.
My condolences.

A beautiful PG custom, I now own that originally belonged to David Uosikkenen of the Hooters and In the Pocket.

Peter had a passion for art, music and history which was extraordinary. He was one of the kindest and most gentle and unselfish people I have ever known. When good people like Peter die so young, we have to believe that the Lord has much bigger plans for them. RIP

I am saddened to learn of the loss of my school mate from my high school graduating class. Peter was a dear friend and fellow crafter who had deep insight and a dogged desire for authenticity, design and attention to detail. Through the school years he sat behind me in home room and at one time we shared an interest in a pocket watch. After we reacquainted in 1994, I valued my intermittent and heart felt visits to each of his homes where he worked masterfully on his dreams. We shared so many laughs and I will miss his dry humor, his brilliance, his ingenuity and his infectious grin. He seemed innately curious about so many things. Peter lived this motto....

My heart goes out to Nola, Paul and all of Peter's family.
As Children, we would stay out on summer evenings with sleeping bags on lawn chairs and search the skies for shooting stars. I will always think of Peter when I see a shooting star.

Peter was a great online friend and I will miss him dearly. We did a lot of business together over the years. Many of the guitars he built started from bodies I would send him. He would then show me his plans for the parts he would buy and every one of his builds was totally amazing! He was a true craftsman and an artist who was never afraid to go extreme. He was an innovator in the guitar world. First class friend and I will miss him. Bianka, your dad spoke of you often, he was very proud of you!

Dear Nola, Bianka, Paul and family,

I was deeply saddened of your loss and send my heartfelt condolences to your family.
I was in Peter's graduating class and grew up in Sherrill close to Kenwood. Cleve (Smith) MacKenzie and I were close friends in highschool and we occasionally spent time with Peter as well. Cleve and his mom lived in the Mansion House. Peter was always kind and thoughtful. It warms my heart to know what a remarkable man he became.I know Peter will be truly missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Nola, Paul, Del, and family,
I can't begin to tell you how sorry I was to read of Peter's passing. What a really wonderful person he was and what a gift it was to know him and call him a friend. The fact that he was there in a period that was pretty dark for me makes me appreciate his spirit even more. I remember humor, wisdom, and the joy that comes with seeing eye to eye with someone. He was truly remarkable and I'm better for having known him. Truly grateful.
You all are of course in my thoughts and prayers.

Pete was one of the nicest people to work with at Oneida LTD. He treated everyone with respect. He used to come to McDonalds with Miss. B. That is what I called his daughter. I haven't seen him in awhile. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
