I lived across the street from Dan and his family during some of my childhood years in Athens. Something was always going on at the Quillian's house! I saw firsthand turtles and snakes. I played with D.D. and Cay every day. Dan and Sue were great parents, giving the children many life-enriching activities, while keeping them rooted firmly in respect and self-discipline. Dan was one of those men who could seemingly do anything and everything, and was gracious and generous in sharing his knowledge. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of passion for the outdoors.

I knew Dan for nearly 25 years. He was my main mentor on hunting and just about anything I wrote about that pastime had a bit of Dan in it. He was a legend among Georgia outdoorsmen and one those few people I knew I could count on at any time. I'll miss him and so will all outdoorsmen in Georgia.

My deepest sympathies to the Quillian family at the passing of Mr. Dan. The state of Georgia has lost a true steward of natural resources within this state and a pioneer in terms of management of these resources by Dan's actions to help bring about a "bow season" for the hunters of Georgia. My prayers are with you.

I met Dan in the late 80s at his shop, Archery Traditions. My friends and I would drive from Atlanta to Athens every Wednesday night for his archery league, & thanks to Dan's patient teaching and advice we developed a love for archery & the community surrounding it, continuing on to occasionally participate in tournaments including John Hood's Robin Hood tournaments in Elberton. He was a big man with a bigger heart, the last of the great hunters, & will be sorely missed.

When I was young, I remember being in awe of the big, gruff man that was Cay’s Dad. When I was older, I was blessed with the opportunity to work for Dan at his archery shop and pleasantly surprised to find a big ole sweetheart beneath that gruff exterior. I knew next to nothing about archery or hunting, but Dan was so patient in teaching me to shoot and educating me about hunting and hunter’s rights. Those times hanging at the shop with Dan & Sue are some of my fondest memories. Love, Jeanne

Dear Sue,
I learned of Dan's death from our Cousin Sam Freeman. I still remember Dan as my cousin who played with snakes and never got bitten. Judging from the obituary, he lived a wonderful life doing what he loved. My sympathy to you and your children. Leslie (Nixon) Hollister

Dear Quillian family-I was saddened to learn of Dan's passing-I knew him long ago in my own Boy Scout days. I never have known anyone more at home in the woods-anywhere-than Dan was. I told my Daddy if I ever got lost in the woods, I'd want to be with Dan. He agreed, but said if I was with him, there was no chance you'd be lost! I'll miss him terribly-my prayers are with you.

I also new Dan for over 50 years and from him I learned Archery and a love for the woods and hunting. He took my Boy Scout Troup # 1 at First Methodist Church on many camping trips down the Oconee River and taught us Archery and about Indians, animals and snakes. I feel honored to have been a friend and have been one of Dan's boys. With his passing we lose the last of the great men of Archery of this century. A pioneer in the field of traditional archery he led many of us down the true path of archery by introducing us to the long bow back in the early 70's. I have not strayed for one moment in my belief that the long bow is the only true way to hunt thanks to Dan. Thanks to Dan I also only hunt with Black Powder if I hunt at all with a gun. I will miss him but know he has made it across the river to the happy hunting grounds all hunters seek. May God Bless and keep his family in this time of grief.

I knew Dan for almost 50 years and am greatly indebted to him for many things, including teaching me to shoot a bow and arrow, to deer hunt, to duck hunt, to call foxes and bobcats, and to catch a rattlesnake without getting bitten. We bow hunted for deer all over Georgia and South Carolina, and I spent many nights in a tent with him, listening to him snore. We had a great deal of fun together "in the old days." He was a good friend and I will miss him.
