Albert James Kingston

Athens - Albert James Kingston, age 90, died Friday, May 16. He was born in Brooklyn on November 25, 1917 to Albert James and Mabel Brown Kingston. He attended public schools in Kenmore, N.Y. He earned a BS at Buffalo State Teachers' College in 1938. Afterwards he worked for Curtiss-Wright in Iran with the Lend-Lease Program. He subsequently served in the Army Air Corps form 1943-1945. After his army service, he entered Cornell University where he earned an MS and a PhD in Educational Psychology. He married Ann Heddens of Pasadena in 1947. He was professor of education at Texas A&M University from 1950-1955. From 1955-1956 he worker for the federal government's Point Four program as an advisor to the Ethiopian Ministry of Education in Addis Ababa. After a brief period as a consultant for the Atlanta public school system and an adjunct instructor at Georgia State College, he took a position as a professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia where he remained until his retirement in 1985. He was cofounder of the National Reading Association, coauthored several textbooks, and published more than 100 articles on aspects of learning and education. In retirement he spent many years as a docent volunteer at the University of Georgia Art Museum.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Ann. He is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Kingston Clinkscales and her husband Ronald R.; son, John (Jack) H. Kingston and his wife Elizabeth (Libby) Morris; daughter, M. Jean Kingston; grandchildren, Elizabeth Carswell Kingston, Alexander Lucas Clinkscales, John Heddens Kingston Jr., Barbara Taylor-Clinkscales, Ann Lovett Kingston, James Morris Kingston and Albert James Downs-Kingston.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 18, at Bridges Funeral Home from 6 - 8 p.m. Services will be held at Saint Stephens Anglican Church on Monday, May 19, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers please send memorial gifts to Saint Stephens, 800 Timothy Road, Athens, GA 30606, or to the University of Georgia Art Museum.
