John Damm, aged 94, passed away Saturday, August 22, at his home in Costa Mesa surrounded by family and friends.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical and industrial engineering. During World War II he worked on radar systems, and, later at GE, worked on development of the Seawolf nuclear submarine.
John had a long career in business and worked at International General Electric Company in New York City for over a decade, living in Darien, Connecticut. He then moved with his family to California and worked at Bechtel Corporation, initially in San Francisco, then later in Southern California. He sold power plant equipment and installations all over the world, including Venezuela, Argentina, Indonesia, Iran, Taiwan, South Korea and China. Following his retirement from Bechtel Corporation in 1985, he had a second career in real estate development, buying and selling rental properties and developing condominiums in Southern California. John and his family lived in Huntington Beach, California, for over 40 years.
John was an energetic man of diverse talents, wit and charm. His spirit and optimism will always be remembered. He was loved by many, and will be missed by all who knew him.
John was predeceased by Adelaide, his loving wife of 68 years, in 2010. They raised and are survived by their three children and spouses, Lee and Joe Yadrick of Huntington Beach, California, Nancy and Bob Bell of Rancho Santa Fe, California, and Jack Damm and Barbara Althoff of Los Altos Hills, California. They are also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. John is also survived by his sister, Mildred Spath of Schaumburg, Illinois.
He will rest with Adelaide at Cathedral Memorial Gardens in Garden Grove, California.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Sept. 26, 2015 at Cathedral Memorial Gardens, 13280 Chapman Ave, Garden Grove, CA 92840. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to
