Elizabeth June "Betty" Lageson

1927 - 2019
Elizabeth 'Betty' June Lageson
June 6, 1927 - Oct. 13, 2019
Betty (Swiberg) Lageson, born at home in Portland, grew up in the Kenton neighborhood with her parents, Carl and Anna (Swartz) Swiberg and her four siblings. An exemplary student at Immaculata High School, Betty was offered a scholarship to Seattle University, which she declined in order to support her parents. Chester Lageson, a friend of her brother Jack, offered to teach Betty to drive. Driving lessons and friendship led to courtship and in 1948, Betty and Chet were married. One year later, their first child, Susan was born followed by Kathryn. They moved to San Diego where Chet worked as a plumber and the family grew with the arrival of David, Thomas and Anna. Having enjoyed a decade of sunny weather, picnics in Balboa Park and beach adventures Betty and Chet returned to North Portland and completed their family with the arrival of Janet. Betty was an artistic quilter and a voracious reader who loved to travel. Though heartbroken by the loss of her beloved Chet in 2008, she continued to embrace life.
Betty passed away at home, surrounded by her family. She leaves six children; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A rosary service will be held at 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 21, 2019, also at Holy Cross. All are welcome.
