Class/142431.photo1.jpgDANNER, HARLAND T., Born in Detroit, Michigan April 21, 1915. Grew up in Ann Arbor, Mich. where he played football during his years at Ann Arbor High School. He became a Chion Olympic style wrestler at the University of Michigan where he won Big Ten conference titles in several divisions. He led an anthropological expedition into Mexico during his junior year at University of Michigan where he lived with a stone age tribe of natives called the Lacandones. He returned to the University of Michigan to present a series of cultural evenings with films of his experiences. Upon graduation he was accepted by the United States Department of Justice where he served as a special agent. He went on to become a member of the U.S. Diplomatic Corps in Latin America. Has lived in Puerto Rico, Colombia, Haiti, Santo Domingo, Trinidad, Venezuela, Mexico. Harland spoke English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Mayan. He became the Liaison between the Venezuelan Ministry of Labor and the U.S. oil drilling companies, and was chief executive engineer for Pepsi Cola International, he founded several companies in Venezuela during the 1950's which are still operating successfully. He returned to the United States and founded a company in Michigan, manufacturing safety equipment for Universities Athletic Teams. In 1990 Harland retired to Orlando. Harland is survived by his wife, Maria; son, Harley; daughter, Mary; and granddaughter, Rose. A Memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Monday evening, July 15, 2002 at 7:30PM with Father Brian R. Sheridan officiating.
