LANGFORD, CARL T., age 92, of Orlando passed away on Saturday July 9, 2011 at his daughter's home surrounded by his children and with the compassionate, loving care of Hospice. Carl was born on 10 N. Hill Street on July 23, 1918. Growing up in Orlando he joined the Boy Scouts of America attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in 1934. In 1970 he was presented the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. When America entered World War II, Carl was Orange County's first selective service draftee and proudly served in the U. S. Army for 5 years until discharged a Major in 1946. During his war years, he met and married his beloved
Marietta Perkins while stationed at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Returning to Florida after the war, Carl attended the University of Florida at Gainesville and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1948. He majored in accounting and was elected by the student-body-at-large Chancellor of the Honor Court. While living in campus housing he was elected Mayor of Flavette Village. After graduation, he started Slemons and Langford Construction Company in Orlando, building hundreds of homes, a few banks and motels, and a parking garage. Profoundly affected by John F. Kennedy's assassination, Carl was impassioned to help improve his city and his country. He entered the political arena in 1967, was elected Mayor of Orlando and served for 13 years before retiring in 1980 as Mayor Emeritus. His most significant achievement was negotiating the purchase (for $1) of the land used by McCoy Air Force base, which became Orlando International Airport (OIA) now one of the largest airports in the United States. Thomas Albert Langford; his mother Annie Self Langford; his brother Edward Ross Langford; his sister Jean Sanderson; and his wife of over 60 years Marietta
Perkins Langford whom he lost in 2005. Carl is survived by his three daughters: Joan Langford
Buchanan of Orlando, Susie
Champion-Bee (James), Arkansas, Valinda Langford, South Carolina; and his son Thomas Edward
Langford (Pam), Orlando. Carl is also survived by eight grandchildren: Carl Buchanan of California; Kristoffer Buchanan, South Carolina; Tom Shrum, Washington DC; Terry Carter, Arkansas; Sharon Langford, Orlando; Thomas
Langford Jr., Orlando; Valinda Daves, North Carolina; and Christy
Seagraves, North Carolina. He has 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 4 to
7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the Baldwin Fairchild Lake Ivanhoe Chapel. Funeral services for Carl T. (Call me by my first name-"Mayor") Langford will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Orlando. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando.
