Rutherford Rogers Obituary

Rogers, Dr. Rutherford (Rudy) Dr. Rutherford (Rudy) D. Rogers, Director of Major Research Libraries, died on Feb. 17, 2015 at age 99. He retired after 16 years as the Yale University Librarian in 1985. Prior to going to Yale, Dr. Rogers had been the Director of the Research Libraries at the New York Public Library. He was also the Deputy Head of the largest library in the world, The Library of Congress; Director of the Stanford University Libraries, the Rochester Public Library and the Monroe County Library among many others. Dr. Rogers co-authored University Library Administration, the standard work on the subject. He was a member of the first group of libraries to visit the Soviet Union as part of an official exchange in 1961, one of the first librarians to lecture on research library methods in China in 1980, and honored by the king of The Netherlands for his assistance to their library system. During WWII, Dr. Rogers served in the Air Force for four years, advancing from Private to Captain. He is survived by his wife Edith Bernette Rogers, Winter Park, Fla and Waynesville, N.C.; his daughter Jane Ardell; grandchildren James Rutherford Draper, Elizabeth Draper Solovos; her husband Dean Solovos; and great-grandson Nicholas Solovos. Internment will be in the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium at Orlando, Fla.
