Ashley Anderton Notice
Anderton, Ashley 45, of Boston, a dedicated teacher, devoted mother, and beloved wife, daughter, sister, and aunt, passed away during the early morning of the summer solstice on Thursday, June 22, 2017, after a three-year battle with triple negative breast cancer. Ashley was born in Winter Park, Florida on March 7, 1972. A child of the sun and ocean, she grew up bodysurfing the cerulean waves of the Atlantic, stirring up coquinas with her feet rooted in the tides of New Smyrna Beach. She attended the University of Florida, where she met her future husband, Derek van Beever. Together they rode horses on the beaches of Camargue, France, trekked with the elephants of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and contemplated life in the cafes of Den Haag, Holland before settling down in New England. After earning her master's degree in English, Ashley became a highly respected high school English teacher at Newton South High School. Ashley will be remembered for her passion for literature, teaching the works of her beloved Shakespeare, Toni Morrison, Milan Kundera, and Louise Erdrich, and also for her deep commitment to her students. She was a dedicated public servant of the Newton schools for 17 years. Ashley lived a beautiful life full of music, gardening, yoga, running, books, barbecues, and ski trips, raising her three artistic, fun-loving, big-hearted, soccer-playing boys, Tayo, Kai, and Zander. Her husband and three children survive Ashley. Her parents, David and Davena Anderton, her sisters, Erin Stanley and Amanda McKay, and her brother, Scott Anderton, will miss her beyond measure. Ashley's family will hold a private memorial service. Please consider donating to the Ashley Anderton Memorial Fund at the Boston Foundation, www.tbf.org/ashleyandertonmemorialfund. Contributions will go toward medical research on triple negative breast cancer, educational scholarships for students in need at Newton South High School, as well as travel scholarships for students who wish to study abroad.
