HUGHES, PHYLLIS "Russell, I told you I was sick." Surrounded by her family, long time resident of Orlando, Florida, Phyllis Flake Hughes passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018, peacefully at her home. Phyllis was 90. Phyllis was born in Cocoa Beach, Florida and grew up in Titusville, Florida. Phyllis was a 13th generation native Floridian. Her family helped to settle the New Smyrna Beach area. She attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and Delta Psi Kappa national honorary fraternity. Upon graduation, Phyllis returned home and was the Physical Education Coach for Melbourne High School. In 1956, Phyllis Meredith Flake married her beloved husband, Russell V. Hughes. Together they traveled the world with their friends making many fond memories and stories of their adventures. Phyllis was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church and the Country Club of Orlando. In her younger years, Phyllis loved playing tennis, golf, and bowling, boasting a prestigious score of 279. In her later years, many received her love of decoupaging as gifts. Phyllis also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, cheering for University of Florida Gators and caring for her cats. Her parents, Mrs. Clair Tyner Flake and Mr. Cordtlandt Francis Flake, along with her brother John C. "Corky" Flake predeceased Phyllis. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Russell V. Hughes, her two cherished sons, Spencer and Bradley Hughes, two adored daughter-in-laws, Dee Dee and Amy Hughes, her two treasured grandchildren, McKinsey and Garrett Hughes, and her revered sister, Joberta Flake Parker of Newton Falls, Ohio. Very dear to her heart were her nieces, nephews and their children who said that their Aunt Phyl was a "fun aunt". "Mama Phyl" was the nickname that many of the neighborhood children gave her. She was always cooking for them, teaching them to throw a ball or loading them up in her car to take them to New Smyrna Beach. Phyllis will be remembered for many things: her welcoming arms, generosity, confidence, devotion to church and God. Phyllis's heart was always open as well as her garage door where the refrigerator was always full of soda, water and snacks for the neighborhood kids. Mama Phyl always made you feel welcome and part of "her" family. Phyllis was loved by many. She will be greatly missed! Our family is grateful for the kindness and prayers that have been extended to us. Please continue to pray for peace and healing for our family. We would like to thank Annie Bob, Judy Miller, and Craig "Smitty" Smith, for their devotion and care of Phyllis. God Bless. Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at 11:00am the family will host a Celebration of Life for Phyllis Hughes at: St. Michael's Episcopal Church 2499 North Westmoreland Drive Orlando, FL 32804 followed by a 12:30pm reception at the Country Club of Orlando. In lieu of flowers, CARE Feline Rescue will be accepting donations in Phyllis's name. Donations can be mailed to: CARE Feline Rescue, PO Box 4552, Winter Park, Florida 32793 or can be made online through www.CAREFelinetnr.org

Mrs Hughes was an icon to the kids of the neighborhood. Always supporting, encouraging, feeding and in many cases disciplining those who will miss her comfort and welcoming home. Her smile is painted in our memory.

Phyllis was a monarch to her family and a true example of a the kind of person you could confide in and always had a kind word. She was always straight with her advise and that meant more than a glossed over answer. But more than anything I want to convey my utmost condolences to the Hughes Family. May you rest in the sweet arms of Jesus until we see you again one day.

Dear Phyllis, you were one special friend to many, but you were my one very special friend. Thank you for 90 years of love and laughter.
To Russell, Spencer, Dee Dee, Bradley, Amy and children; you all were her life, and you brought her much joy and pride. Keep her memory alive by putting others first. It's really something she did best!
As Frank says, miss her already.
May God grant her eternal rest.
