LLOYD PINKNEY Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from May 6 to May 7, 2014.
PINKNEY, Dr. H.F. Lloyd
Dr. H.F. Lloyd Pinkney passed away peacefully at (Garden Terrace) in Ottawa on Saturday, May 3rd at the age of 83. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Mary Gayle of 52 years, his son Chris (Mimi Wood) and daughters Mary Ellen (Maurice Scott) and Laurie (Nigel Wallis). Proud grandfather to Jakob, Ryan, Jaxon, Troy, Regan, Grace, Matthew, Gavin and Logan. He is predeceased by his sisters Thelma of Blairmore, Alberta and Audrey of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Lloyd was born in Blairmore, Alberta on February 9, 1931 and completed his Bachelor of Engineering Physics at the University of Alberta in 1952. Upon graduation, he began his 44-year career with the National Research Council of Canada, where he was involved with numerous projects with the Institute of Aerospace Research and the Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute. While working at the NRC, he completed his Master's and PhD in Engineering Mechanics at Stanford University.
During his time with the NRC, Lloyd's work ranged from improving Canada's highway safety to stabilizing the Research Council's wind tunnel. The highlight of his career was the involvement with Canada's Space program. In the early 1970s, Lloyd co- designed the Space Vision System, a Real- Time Photogrammetry System. His work was considered a major advancement in space technology. The Space Vision System enables the Canadarm to handle payloads that are out of sight to astronauts operating this giant robotic arm. It has also played an essential role in the construction of the International Space Station.
While his mind was often in the stars, his heart was firmly rooted with his family. Lloyd was an avid golfer and enjoyed skiing, indeed he was a member of the University of Alberta ski team. Lloyd had a passion for music. He played the violin, sang in the Ottawa Choral Society and was a member of the Gleemen Four. He was also an active member of City View United Church.
Although the last few years were a challenge for Lloyd, he never lost his friendly manner. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Bridlewood Trails and Garden Terrace for their care and compassion.
Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road, Thursday 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A Memorial Service to celebrate Lloyd's life will be held at City View United Church, 6 Epworth Avenue, Ottawa, on Friday May 9th at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.

Dear Mary-Gayle, Chris, Mary-Ellen and Laurie: I was quite saddened to hear of Lloyd's passing - although we only got up to Ottawa a few times over the years I do remember having wonderful chats with Lloyd about anything. He obviously was a brilliant man, yet he had the common touch making me feel quite at home with his warm smile and manner.

Mary-Gayle and all the family,
Eva and I send you our deepest sympathies and thoughts. We are indeed sorry that we were on a trip to Europe and were unable to see you all in person last week. I've just finished reading the guest book which brought back the many times we spent with Lloyd. I particularly remember the many technical discussions with Lloyd and my struggles to keep my brain going as fast as his.

Best wished to all of you -- perhaps we can get together when we are back visiting in Canada.

My most sincere condolences to Mary-Gayle and the whole Pinkney family.

I will always have very fond memories of the years I worked with and for Lloyd. He certainly was the best boss I ever had.

Lloyd did indeed have his mind in the stars. He gravitated at the boundary between research engineering, mathematics and theoretical science and was extremely effective and happy being in that space. Whenever he returned back to earth he shared with his team members the most amazing practical conclusions of his analysis and out we went performing the experiments that would validate his thinking. Then, later, be would take all that data and develop methodologies allowing for the performance of the most difficult tasks on earth, or in space, with amazing elegance, ease and precision. No problem would offer much resistance to his remarkable analytical capabilities and he had the knack to spread his passion around so that his colleagues would also become fully involved and committed to the projects at hand.

Lloyd was also a most loyal and humane boss, always encouraging, never critical and often humorous, this led his team members to give him back 100%. I also had the opportunity to often meet with Mary-Gayle and their children in the early eighties, and was amazed at the level of harmony and love that Lloyd shared with all his family members.

Farewell Lloyd, you will be sorely missed.

Dear Mary Gayle,
We never had an opportunity to get to know Lloyd well but know for sure that he was blessed with an awesome wife. May you and your family know God's presence as you make this difficult journey together. Just today I learned that Lloyd's brother in law, James Clarke Bradley is part of my family tree!
