I remember David as a very dear friend and a great survey statistician. I had the honor and pleasure to work with him, planning the first ICES in Buffalo 1993 and the ISI session in Istanbul 1997. I felt very sad to learn about his too early death, and my deep sympathies go to his family.

My condolences go out to you Marilyn and Jill. No words can fill the hole that his passing leaves with you. I remember times when David and I would hang out in both grade school and at Harbord Collegiate. David was always very focused and thoughtful in his deliberations even as we were growing up.

Like many in the statistics community, I was shocked and saddened to hear of David's death. His contributions as a scientist and public servant were great, but what I will remember best were his friendly greetings and always trenchant comments whenever we encountered each other at professional meetings. He will be missed by many. My condolences to the family.
