Erwin KORANYI Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Jun. 12 to Jun. 13, 2012.
KORANYI, Dr. Erwin K
1924 - 2012
Dr. Koranyi passed away peacefully on Monday June 11th in his home. Beloved husband of the late Edie, who he adored, brother of Marta, brother-in-law of Eva and Oscar, uncle of Ann and of Peter and wonderful, much loved friend to many. Survived the Holocaust with great loss and pain. Erwin was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1924 and, since his early childhood, was dedicated to being a physician. Having survived the Holocaust with the help of Raoul Wallenberg, he escaped to the West where he graduated in Medicine in Innsbruck, Austria. After spending time in Israel, Erwin settled with Edie in Canada. He was a Professor Emeritus of Neuropsychiatry at the University of Ottawa, Past Chief of Psychiatry at the Ottawa General Hospital and former head of the Neuropsychiatric Unit at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. He enjoyed an international reputation as a psychiatrist and was internationally recognised as a teacher of excellence, a mentor to many students and residents and was a researcher and author of many academic publications. He had been an invited speaker all over the world. He recently published Dreams and Tears and Echo of Edith which tell the story of his family's lives during the Holocaust. His family and friends are grateful for the love and devotion of Laura Murray and the special care of Dr. Esdaile and the staff of the CCAC. Those who have known him will miss his intellect, knowledge and compassion. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 13th at 1771 Cuba Avenue at 11 a.m., followed by interment at the Bank Street Cemetery (2692 Highway 31). In lieu of shiva, mourners are invited to 20 Driveway, Suite 1406 following interment.

I was Dr. Koranyi’s secretary at the Ottawa General Hospital in the early 1970s. Working with him was a privilege. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I am very sorry to read that Mr Korányi has passed away. Last year I found a part of his book on the internet here in Sweden, Dreams and Tears, where he wrote about the last days of my cousine, with a correct name Zsuzsika Szántó. My parents and relatives were in the same Swedish House as Mr Korányi in Budapest in 1944/45. I wanted to thank him these details, which I never heard from anybody else, including my parents, I was born 1946. But I waited too long to contact him from Sweden. Blessed the memory of him. My belated sympathy on the death of Dr. Koranyi. As a young woman, recently arrived immigrant from England, I was his Medical Secretary at the Ottawa General. Our office was on Cumberland in a little house. Dr. Koranyi was always kind and considerate. With much respect.

I am so sorry to find this news so very late. I was a patient of Dr. Koranyi for many years and he helped me with so many issues, I cannot tell you. I am writing today since I had a dream with him last night.
He never told me too many details about his life, even with my proding. He did tell me, however, about the orchard that his father had and we laughed, well smiled really. He was a true professional which is not common these days. I liked to tease him about my being a Jungian!
I miss him even more now.
