KOOP, Jacob Passed away peacefully at the age of 86, with his beloved wife of 61 years, Elsa, and his daughter, Barbara, by his side. Predeceased by his son, Gerald, Jake will be deeply missed by Elsa and children Valerie, Robert (Malgosia), Barbara and Richard (Patricia) and grandchildren, Kelsey, Alessandra, Gabriel, Joshua, Matthew, Nicolas and Robbie. Born 1923 in Petershagen, Ukraine, Jake emigrated to Canada in 1924. He grew up in southern Manitoba near Altona and attended the Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna. He served in the Canadian Army from 1943-1946. Jake then attended the Universities of Manitoba and McGill. In 1951, he joined the Defence Research Board, working in defence science for 35 years in the areas of scientific information, intelligence, liaison, strategic planning and international relations. Throughout the height of the Cold War, he advised the Canadian intelligence community on issues relating to nuclear weapons proliferation, nuclear test ban negotiations, strategic arms control and ballistic missile defence. From 1967-1968, Jake was a Fellow at the Harvard Center for International Affairs; from 1977-1980, he was the Science Counsellor at the Canadian High Commission in London. Jake retired from DND in 1986 and traveled extensively with his beloved Elsa. He was a charter member of the Ottawa Mennonite Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Mennonite Church or the Mennonite Central Committee Canada would be appreciated. Jake was a gentle soul who cherished his family with all his heart. He will always be remembered with much love. Friends may pay their respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 1255 Walkley Road, (1 block east of Bank St.) on Monday, July 6th from 6-9 p.m. Funeral Service Tuesday, July 7th at 1:00 p.m. at the Ottawa Mennonite Church, 1830 Kilborn Avenue, Ottawa.

Dear Elsa and Family,
I send you and your family my deepest sympathies. Jake lived a good and long life filled with family, friends, church and work. My late husband, John, and I always enjoyed his company, especially when he could still fully participate in the Low German Group. My prayers and thoughts are with you, Elsa, and your family.
