Paul Maslen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 26, 2011.
MASLEN, Paul Steven Paul left us Wednesday, supported in his journey by all who loved him the most. Paul was a man of many talents, who could right most wrongs, from a broken faucet to a dysfunctional spread sheet. For him life was never boring or obtuse. The ethical path was always clear. He was unabashedly proud of his children Dave and Kate and delighted when they respectively married Chia and Wayne whom he saw as their perfect life partners. Granddaughter Chelsea was the icing on his cake. Married to Martha for over 40 years he modelled fidelity and commitment and that all things endure no matter what befalls us. He was a loved big brother for Liz Roberta and Susan and fellow youthful adventurer with brother Greg. He will be missed by lifelong friends Marg and Gerry. Predeceased by his much loved mother Joy, and survived by his father Robert. All of us who love him thank our dear friends who supported us through the last difficult two years. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses who worked tirelessly on his behalf and who were unfailingly respectful and kind. For now family will try to manage life without him but in due course will let friends know how we will celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers donations to the Ottawa Humane Society, United Way, or Cancer Society would be appreciated. What would I do?" I said to Pooh, "If it wasn't for you," and Pooh said: "True"

Dear Kate & Family,

Losing a close family member is very hard; it really hurts a lot. Days and weeks go by and you sometimes wonder if you will ever get over it. I wish I could tell you that you do, but the fact is that even after years, there will always be this bittersweet pain of missing someone you really love. It may not continue to occupy your thoughts each and every minute, but grief will continue to catch you off guard for the rest of your life. Whether doing something mundane or extraordinary, it will all come flooding back to you: their life, what they taught you, the love you shared, and the fun you had with them. But you know what? I wouldn't want it any other way, nor should you. All these feelings just mean that you had someone in your life who was very important to you and who mattered. If this pain is the cost of remembering someone that special, then in my mind that is a price well worth paying.

The short time I spent with Paul at your wedding revealed to me that he was a very bright and enagaging man who was obviously both loving and loved. It is very sad to see such a shining light go out. All I hope is that as you continue to experience those bittersweet moments, they become more "sweet" than "bitter."

Your friend,

Chris Grandy

Dear Martha and family,
It is with extreme sadness that I just read of Paul's passing. He was everything that you have written and more. He helped me in the early days of building my business. He was kind and wise with a passion for all things good. He will be missed but not forgotten.
