Dearest Brydie, Margot
There is no time in Eternity and that is where I feel we are connected with your spiritual Dad right now and forever. The loss of his physical presence, those shared life time communications with him, and times spent together on sunny days or in cosy fireside chats, will always be a favourite place to go in our minds to find him there, warm, charming and some frustratingly difficult spells too. He will always be the embodied cognition of an artist who lived to share his time and positive energy enjoying as much as he could of what life brought his way, with us all.
I miss him so much, esp. his little thoughtful notes that were gifts of joy that came in the mail. Like his works of art, we continue to enjoy them.
Thank you for sharing Him with us all. You too are his beautiful gifts.
With shared sympathies at our loss,
Love
Virginianne

Thank you to Robert for his inspiration in teaching thousands of students about sacrifice and freedom. The West Carleton Secondary Students were honoured by Robert's presence at their Remembrance Day assemblies. May you find an eternity that soars the skies. Robert, your "High Flight" lives on. Mr. Hyndman was my teacher at the Ottawa School of Art in the early 80s. He was teaching portraiture and I loved his class. I had a lot of respect for him and kept fond memories of that experience. Condolences to his family.

I met Robert through my parents, Judy and Jean Bonhomme, when I was about seven years old. I loved to watch him draw and it gave me inspiration to follow my own dreams and become an artist. I still have photo portraits that he took of my mother and I as a child. He created two pencil sketches of my sister Stephanie, that she still treasures.
He was always kind and warm and lead a life full of creativity.
God Bless.

To The Hyndman Family... my sincere condolences for the loss of your father, brother and friend. I met him only once, through my father, who was his friend during the war and after - B/Gen Michael Doyle. Dad always spoke highly of your father and was sad to learn of his passing. You Dad led a rich life which enriched others' lives and I hope your memories help comfort you at this time.

Brydie:
I don't normally make two entries into a guest book, but the comments of other folks have really made me think about the legacy of your dad.
I have been in a lot of art shows and sold a few paintings. I have been reasonably prolific over the years. However, I have been in a "drought" for about a year now.
That drought has ended. Your dad was the embodiment of continuing to do that which symbolized the inner spirit and strength of the person. He kept on painting and drawing.
For any of us who have the ability to wallow in a "creative drought" after the seeing Robert "walk the walk" for all those years, is, to me, somehow not honouring the memory of the man, and the creative efforts he infused in all of us every day.
I am surrounded by the smell of linseed oil and drying paint...the "drought" is over.
Let us all try to emulate your dad's example, and let us hope that the last thing people see us doing "is sitting up in bed with a sketchbook in our hands".

Brydie and Margot,
My deapest sympathies to all your family. I will always remember the twinkle in your father's blue eyes when I painted his portrait. A beautiful man in every way. A very giving man, he shared his love of art with many of us. He will always be remembered.

Dear Bridie and Family
Bridie - many thanks for letting us know that your father has passed from this physical realm. What an exceptional father, friend, teacher and artist he has been. He was over-brimming with life and embraced it fully, especiallyin his wonderful art. Robert saw art as a key to understanding and expressing life’s experiences and he loved to share his vision and talents with his many students and friends. What a gift he has been to the world: flying Spitfires to keep us free, and then painting to help us see the beauty of the world and of each other. He continues to be with us, smiling from his many images on walls across our country and the world.
We feel blessed to have been among his friends. He was always curious about what everyone was doing, providing interesting observations on world affairs, the way someone walked or held their head, the shadow of a tree against a building or how the sun lit the contours of a meadow, or sparkled a brook. He would regale us with his stories and adventures – always with that sparkle in his eyes. Robert was ever young, even as his body began to weaken. He kept striding forward exploring the beauty in nature and in people – always with his eye on the bright side of life, his brush serving as a lens for us to share his vision.
Bridie you, your sister Margot, and family have suffered a great loss, but it must be a comfort to know that Robert led a good and long life, and that mostly he did what he loved to do – paint and explore the world. You have also been privileged to share the life of a great man and a great artist.
With much Love - Jens and Jeannie Laursen

Brydie:
Thanks for letting us know. Jennifer expressed it well-"comparing notes with Augustus John". I can't help but think of the story your dad told me about going out rural England in the war, and being met by Mr. John at the train station...hopefully, that experience was his introduction to his new set of challenges.
What can I say except how much my wife and I feel blessed to have briefly known a man we grew to adore and respect in a "nano-second".
I look forward to meeting Jennifer at her show in March here in Toronto and laughing with her about the life force that was Robert Hyndman, and how lucky we were to have him for so long.

My condolences to the Hyndman family. I was sad to hear this news, but was so pleased that my husband and I got to visit with Bob after we moved to Ottawa in 2006. Back in 1977, when I was not yet 11, Mr. Hyndman painted my portrait in Saskatoon (actually he did almost everyone in my family's) and I have cherished it every since. I took the portrait to visit Bob about 2 years ago and was so happy to see him again and to see so many of his beautiful works. It was an honour to know him.

Bridie and Margot. I was truly sorry to hear of the passing of your Father. I had the great fortune to meet him a few years ago; first at the Ottawa School of Art as we discussed a commision and then several times at his studio in Chelsea. He always greeted me warmly, - he was truly a gentleman.
My wife and I consider ourselves fortunate that we have one of his portraits from the early sixties. I will always view this painting with the fond memory of the artist.
With condolences.

My deepest sympathy to the family of a good friend whose paintings of Andy and Joyce MacKenzie overlook my dining room. Bob and Andy were fighter pilot buddies and shared many stories and drinks as guests of Michael Doyle at the Royal Ottawa. Per Ardua ad Astra. Alison MacKenzie.

I first met you and your parents at Weslemkoon Lake. I remember annual Christmas cards your Dad had made with your sketched faces. What beautiful girls!

Brydie and Margot... I felt a deep sadness at the news that Ottawa had lost one of its greatest national treasures, your Dad. He was such a great support to me as a teenager and I have never forgotten his kindness. His impact on the arts community of Ottawa was huge in ways even he never imagined.
He will be greatly missed by everyone who ever met him, even if just for a moment. He lived his life to the fullest doing the things that made him happy and in so doing gave joy to all.
My deepest condolences to you both and to your family.

Dear Brydie and Margot,
I just wanted to send my sympathy and let you know how much Robert enriched my life---as he enriched the lives of so many people. I will miss him greatly, but hope that he's now comparing notes about art and life with Augustus John.
Love,

Dear Brydie and Margot, am sending my affections and condolences to the memory of a real fine man and friend. He taught with passion and with fun positive spirit... all the time, no matter what hits him, even uses his mishaps to make fun from it. He was responsible for me to pursue my portrait painting, and taught me that being humble was ok. Love him dearly, he lived a wonderful life to the most extent possible, .. I wish people like him lived forever... he is an imprint in my memory forever... Deborah Kerr

Dear Brydie, Margot and family
Our family were blessed and honoured to have known Robert for many, many years and enjoyed so many memorable occasions with him. We will especially miss not having him at our dining room table enjoying a nice glass of wine and a meal talking about art and people. We are sure Gerald and he are catching-up and enjoying each others company. The FitzGibbon Family XXXOOO
