1924 - 2015
Réal-Jean Proulx, with loving family by his side, passed away in Gatineau, QC, on March 21, 2015.
Réal was born in Montebello, QC, on December 7, 1924, and raised in the Laurentian town of Weir, QC. He worked in lumber camps and set up trap lines to help support his family. As a 17 year old in 1942, and with his mother's permission, Réal volunteered for overseas service with the RCAF (Flight Sergeant - 6th Cdn Bomber Group). While on active duty he was seriously wounded and the effects would follow him for the rest of his life.
Réal worked for the CNR in the running trades and then the United Transportation Union rising to be a Sr. Vice-President. He was passionate about the defense of workers' rights and was well respected by both sides of the bargaining table, and in retirement served in numerous associations and pension boards. When not hard at work maintaining his home and property, he found time to read, golf, hunt, and fish.
Réal was entirely devoted to his family and is survived by his wife of 67 years Jacqueline, son Michael (Donna), daughter Suzanne (Richard), grandson Simon, granddaughters Karen (T.J.) and Christine (Matt), great-grandsons Rylan and Cameron, great-granddaughters Abbey and Zoey, and many brothers, sisters, nephews, and nieces.
Réal you have completed your tour of duty.
You have yarded your final train.
Your rod and gun are put aside.
Your tools and pruning shears well cared for.
Well done, Réal! Well done!
A private family service will be held at a later date in accordance with Réal's wishes. We wish to thank all those involved in his excellent care at the Hull Hospital and the centre Mathieu Froment-Savoie in Gatineau, QC. Donations to the Centre or the Salvation Army may be made in Réal's memory.
