Lloyd SWICK Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Jan. 17, 2017.

SWICK, Lloyd A.
MSM, CD, BSc, PPCLI, WWII and Korean War Veteran
Ottawa, ON. At home, surrounded by his family, Lloyd Allan Swick passed away on January 14, 2017, at the age of 94. He was predeceased by his cherished wife, Doris (née Reid), and dear grandson Bryan Swick Turner (Katherine Rodrigues), and survived by five loving daughters: Lana (Gary Davis), Gwen (Randall Coryell), Alison (Michael Turner), Patricia (Tim Fuller) and Brenda; grandchildren Nathan (Candace), Anthony (Amy) and Gregory (Heather) Davis, Ana Swick- Coryell, Evelyn Turner, Maddie and Bobbie Martin; and five great-grandchildren.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, Lloyd was the son of Alexander and Emma Swick, and brother to his beloved sisters Eileen and Audrey.
During the Second World War, Lloyd Swick was an officer in the Calgary Highlanders. He served in action as a platoon commander, company second-in-command, and company commander as his unit moved from Normandy, through the Channel Ports and Belgium and into the Netherlands. He took part in the liberation of many Dutch cities and villages, including Xanten, Ulft, Doetinchem, Apeldoorn, Nunspeet and Groningen.
After the war, he completed a BSc at the University of Manitoba. Like the other veterans studying and starting young families, he and Doris, his soul mate and bright light, lived in the veterans' area on the campus. Many years later Lloyd gathered recollections about these times and published Stories from Veterans Village.
Upon graduation, he re-enrolled in the Army, joining the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He became a paratrooper and commanded a company in Korea with the 1st Battalion. In his career with the PPCLI, he was stationed across Canada and served in Haiti, and in India and Pakistan as a United Nations Observer. His service in Korea gave him another level of insight into the hardships of life for many. Later he wrote a beautiful poem emblematic of the love he felt for the Korean people and his hope for the children.
At the end of his military career, he entered the public service -National Defence, Environment Canada and Emergency Preparedness.
Lloyd's industriousness did not end with retirement. In 2002, he was selected to welcome Princess Margriet of the Netherlands when she visited Ottawa, her birthplace. He was awarded a Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation in 2005 for his work, particularly with the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre. Lloyd was selected as a representative of the veterans of the Liberation of the Netherlands to participate as a member of the Veterans Affairs Canada delegations, which visited the Netherlands in May of 2005 and 2015.
Lloyd was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Doris. They laughed and travelled, appreciated their family and the wonder of each other and everything around them- complementary and a perfect match. Lloyd was an inspiring, loving and energetic father to his girls. He was playful and encouraging-a vivid guide to life. Lloyd played the piano daily. He and Doris loved music and passed this passion on to their daughters. There were countless family excursions- camping in the Rockies and on the prairies, coast-to-coast vacations. Lloyd and Doris loved Canada. They taught their girls about cross-country and downhill skiing, skating, playing tennis, baseball and football, swimming and canoeing, and, above all, the value of a good education. Lloyd was a golfer and coaxed his family to join him. He remained a kayaker at 92. Lloyd made forays into woodworking, uncommon home renovations, nuts-and-bolts figurines, topiary-very few activities were outside the realm of Lloyd's interests. He was a lifelong learner, keen to pull others in.
Dream big, and do it now! Lloyd lived vivaciously and loved people dearly, something evident to all who knew him. Throughout his life, Lloyd radiated joy and optimism to anyone in his sphere.
He was unrestrained, bold, and gracious in his enthusiasm for helping people, taking great delight in singing and playing the piano at seniors' residences, speaking to schoolchildren and Cadet Corps, devising plans to help organizations whose goals appealed to him, canvassing for medical research, assisting individuals with challenges, and providing pianos for community centres. Lloyd's attitude was, "How can I help?"
In recent years he was captivated by the idea of a Canadian monument to honour animals in war. He spearheaded a campaign to create such a memorial, and the Animals in War Dedication monument in Ottawa's Confederation Park was unveiled on November 2, 2012.
Lloyd received many military and civilian awards, including the France and Germany Star, Canadian Korea Medal, Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Meritorious Service Award; however, nothing was more valuable to him than the love of and for his family and friends.
A Memorial Service in Lloyd's honour will be held at Beechwood Cemetery on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 2 p.m.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Canadian Foundation for Animal-Assisted Support Services, The Ottawa Mission, or a charity of choice.

My husband and I got to know Lloyd Swick through canvassing of the Canadian Cancer Society. Lloyd canvassed every year; we could depend on him. When my husband decided to pass the torch on being the Block Captain, Lloyd was happy to become "The Big Cheese" (giggle, giggle). An amazing man, always so happy with great stories to tell of his earlier life. He will be greatly missed.

One last word from our family: Mr. Swick was kind enough to invite use to his celebration of dedicating monuments to animals who served in the war at Confederation Park. In the attached photo he appears with my wife Suzi and daughter Spela Sraka.

Your friend forever!

Mr. Swick has been a friend of our family for many years. I met him through the Olde Forge Rec. Ctr. and we had become great friends. He was kind and generous even to the point of supporting my daughter's charity drives for school. Sorry I missed his funeral service, but I was waiting on a reply from email with pix from our vacation in December. Along with wife Dorothy ( Dota?) they are now both very missed. Our sympathies to the family. Stan, Suzi and Spela Sraka.

I have known Lloyd for 60 years !! I have read the many entries and I am truly at a loss to add anything that has not been said. A wonderful caring person with whom no fault was ever found. Unless it was another favourable attribute!! A great supporter of our regiment and certainly of every veteran that he visited on a regular basis. I will miss his warm grip and accompanying smile on every occasion that met. He truly bought warmth to every meeting

Mr. Swick has been a lifelong friend to myself and my parents. We lived next door to one another for many years. He was a wonderful friend, full of life and fun! I can remember him riding his bike around the neighborhood with the strength of a man much younger than he was. He could play a mean game of tennis too. 27 years ago he and I took tennis lessons together. It wasn't planned that way, it was just coincidence. It was a small group, I believe organized through the City. I can remember Lloyd ringing our doorbell and calling on my Dad. Come on Gordie, let's play tennis, and off the two seniors would walk to our tennis courts nearby. His smile and sense of humor were infectious. He had a spark that would inspire young and old alike. He was truly an inspiration. I no longer live in Ottawa, but I still had the opportunity to visit with him at times. The last time I saw Lloyd was at my mother's funeral, just over a year ago. He was still so full of life, love, enthusiasm and kindness. He began as Mr. Swick and my friend Brenda's father. As I grew older he said you can call me Lloyd. Lloyd you were one of a kind and Joe and I will miss you greatly. There is no preparing for this great sadness and loss. To the family, Joe and I send our deepest sympathies, and wish you peace and love at this time and always. There is nothing as painful as losing someone you love. Love Susan (Byers) and Joe Boudreau

Uncle Lloyd led a long, exciting, productive and rewarding life.
I remember fondly his many visits, (sleep overs) to our home in the Glebe as he passed through Ottawa. He always paid so much attention to me and made me feel important. I was thrilled with his tales of adventure. On one such visit, when I was about 12 years old and he was returning from overseas, he brought me a leopard skin rug. Complete with the head, teeth and claws. It even had the bullet entry and exit holes in the hide. I don't think my mother was too thrilled with this, but I loved it. I even slept on it initially. That rug stayed on the floor beside my bed for many years. Hey, if you want to impress a young boy, (especially 60 years ago), this was what to give him. Wow!
When I was about 25 and had started a new business, Uncle Lloyd mentored me for months. He had relocated to Ottawa and I visited the Swick home on St. Laurent Blvd. nearly weekly, to get his advice, hear his positive attitude and absorb his enthusiasm. He wrote me a personal dynamite letter of reference that I appreciated so much.
There are many more stories that encompass decades, but enough is enough.
Lloyd Swick was truly my friend.
A man's man, to be sure!

Sincere condolences to cousins Lana, Gwen, Allison, Patty & Brenda.

My deepest condolences on the passing of your father & grandfather. When I think of Mr Swick, there is one image that dominates all others - walking down Bonnie Crescent and having Mr Swick pass by, waving hello, riding his bicycle backwards. He always seemed to be enchanted with life and filled with a never-ending curiosity. A wonderful man living life large. He will be greatly missed.

My sincere condolences to Lloyd's Family. Lloyd was a Warrior, Hero, Gentleman and a pleasure to be around. Always interactive and involved with our PPCLI Branch. Every time I walk by the Animals in War monument, or past the PPCLI Monument at Lansdowne Park, I will always reflect and give thanks to your sacrifices and diligence.

You talked about Peace, once you mentioned to me of recalling during WWII when Peace was declared in Europe and you being able to inform your troops at the time... Well Lloyd, Peace has been declared once again. Rest well Hero... Rest in Peace

I never had the opportunity to meet Mr.Swick but was hoping one day I would have had. But I have had the opportunity to talk with him through phone and computer for 5 years. Mr.Swick was a man that I will never forget. He helped inspire me and taught me so much about the animals and their sacrifices they made in war. From him I decided to put up a monument for forgotten heroes in my own home town in Bass River NS. But without him I would never been able to do this or I would never have know about the animals. It is so very true that he was a man that was willing to help anyone. Like my mom says he had a golden heart. When I heard of his passing it saddened me because the world is losing a great man. He was a man of honor and will always be honored by me. To all of his family and friends my deepest sympathy and I will not forget him . Mr.Swick I will keep educating people about the animals, the forgotten heroes, you were a friend and I will miss you. Goodbye.

I am honored to have met Lloyd. As you know he was a very good friend of my father in Winnipeg, Hubert Woerlee. From chatting with Lloyd, I enjoyed hearing of their adventures in their early years together. However what impressed me the most and for what I will be forever thankful, is Lloyd's enthusiasm for life, and for all that he accomplished in his later life. He taught me that life does not end when you become a "senior". He personally accomplished so much in his later years, and that is truly an inspiration for me and for many others. I will always remember singing and dancing with him, to It's a Long Way to Tipperary"... Lots of love and hugs dear Lloyd, Tina (Woerlee) Wilkins

What a lovely tribute.

On behalf of The Canadian Foundation for Animal-Assisted Support Services I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to your family, for this significant loss.

Lloyd was more than a Patron of our Foundation; he was an esteemed role model and dear friend. His zeal for life and contagious smile will be fondly remembered as we share in your loss.

Lloyd would often tell me stories about his beloved family, including the great adventures you shared. His love for all of you was so evident, a special treasure that he held near and dear.

Oh how he loved to stop and smell the roses along the way making the most of every day. His thoughtfulness and sense of humour were cherished gifts and his time, talents and expertise were riches he freely shared.

I will miss my dear friend and mentor and will continue to honour him at every opportunity.

May the peace and assurance of God's love and faithfulness, and the warmth of family and friends, comfort you today and always.

With biggest hugs of compassion and much love, Joanne

Lloyd was a colleague and friend of many years standing and I will miss him. We were emailing shortly before Xmas and had committed to lunch together early in the New Year. Sadly, we left it too late. However, I consider it an honour to have known him. He was old school in the best sense and a true gentleman. His career with the Public Service of Canada was marked by integrity, collegiality and a firm belief in the principle that the public service was all about serving the public interest. His career both in and out of uniform is a model for all aspiring public servants. From a personal perspective, I shall particularly treasure the memory of two white-water canoe excursions we did together on the Madawaska river. My deepest sympathies to his family. You have lost a beloved father and grandfather and Canada has lost one of those men who helped make this country one of the best places on earth to live. God speed Lloyd.
