James Hopfensperger Obituary

James Francis Hopfensperger died peacefully at his Midland, MI home at age 90 on February 3, 2019. Born to George and Leona (Hartzheim) Hopfensperger on March 21, 1928 in Kaukauna, WI, he was the youngest of four children.

He was married to Mary Rose Garvey on September 7, 1950 at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, WI. Jim received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1954 and that same year the couple moved to Midland, MI when he accepted a teaching position with the Midland Public Schools. Jim later earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1965. Prior to arriving in Michigan he served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948, continuing in the United States Navy Reserve until 1953. Jim was recognized in Midland as a one-of-his-kind educator and artist, affectionately referred to as "Mr. Hop" or "Hoppy" by students and colleagues alike. Endlessly engaged, doggedly determined, and unbowed by boundaries, he shepherded a generation of aspiring artists and thinkers at Northeast Intermediate School. In the 1970s he transitioned to a leadership role with the Midland Public Schools, serving as its Fine Arts Coordinator while also teaching as an adjunct faculty member at Delta College and Central Michigan University.

In 1966 he founded and was the principal designer for a family business, Hopfensperger Art Studios. Guided by the steady business hand of his co-owner and spouse, Mary Rose, the studio earned a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and creativity in the Great Lakes area. His highly distinctive architectural glass installations employ rich and varied interplays of color, form, and light to dramatic effect in both religious and secular settings. Midland's Blessed Sacrament Church, completed in 1967 and Jim's home parish, contains some remarkable early examples of his glass window walls and commissioned sculptures. His bronze figures also grace the mid-Michigan landscape and include the noteworthy "Family" sculpture adjacent to the Midland Tridge, dedicated in 1982. Jim also found time to be the owner and manager of several area restaurants including the immensely popular Dog n Suds drive-in on South Saginaw Road from the 1960s into the early 1970s. In addition, he was an occasional but ambitious entrepreneur, imagining and launching projects such as the Mid-Michigan Pop Festival and Rock Concert in 1969.

As the father of ten children he eventually became known as "Pop Hop" and proudly sported a personalized automobile license plate bearing the moniker. He will be missed by those children and their spouses, John Hopfensperger of Midland; Joan Most of Midland; Jeannine Hopfensperger and Thomas Teal of Chesaning; James A. Hopfensperger and Jane Maddox of Kalamazoo; Jay and Nichole Hopfensperger of Appleton, WI; Jed Hopfensperger of Midland; Matthew Hopfensperger and Sian Kwa of Chapel Hill, NC; Mary and Brian Rhame of Cincinnati, OH; Mona and Thomas Priest of Box Elder, SD; and Marie Hopfensperger and Jeffrey Burdick of East Lansing.

He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Jessica (Galen) Westman, Juliana (Doug) Teal-Charles, Josiah Most, Gabrielle (John) Mitchell, John and Jennifer Hopfensperger, Katherine and LiEllen Rhame, Liam Hopfensperger, Jeremy and Noah Hopfensperger, and Miles Burdick; four great-grandchildren, Oliver Westman, Tori Mitchell, and Quinten and Samuel Teal-Charles; his brother Robert Hopfensperger of Oak Lawn, IL; as well as his beloved nephew Frank (Debbie) Reimer of Freedom, WI. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Mary Rose; his parents, George and Leona Hopfensperger; two brothers, George and Leo Hopfensperger, and his daughter-in-law, Rita (Ramsey) Hopfensperger. The family wishes to thank his son, Jed, whose incredible in-home care made it possible for Jim to enjoy a rich life in his home of 61 years until his last day. Funeral liturgy for Jim will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2019 from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3109 Swede Avenue, Midland, MI. Jim's family will receive friends at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street on Friday February 8th from 2-4 and 5-7 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Following Mass, cremation will take place and Jim's ashes will be interred near his own statue of St. Francis in New Calvary Cemetery in Midland, next to the ashes of his beloved spouse, Mary Rose. Donations may be made in his honor to the James F. and Mary R. Hopfensperger Endowed Art Scholarship Fund managed by the Midland Area Community Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral

Mr Hop was my art teacher at Northeast in 1961.
He is the only teacher from those days that I remember.
He was always full of energy and a great communicator.
Nine years later, I ran into him and he was just the same.

My condolences to the entire Hopfensperger family. It was always so evident, during all the years I knew him, how much he loved your mom Mary, and all of you, his beautiful family, and rejoiced in your successes and accomplishments. All of you know that. He wasn't quiet about it. He, was Hoppy about it.

For me, Hoppy was a valued friend, and a fellow art educator for most of my career, which began for me, at Midland High School, in 1960. Because he was at Northeast Intermediate, I of course would get some of his students in my advanced art classes, as they moved on to high school. They came to high school prepared, enthusiastic, and prepared, with a good background in art fundamentals, and techniques. Over the years Hop and I worked together on numerous art related projects, and events, attended numerous state art conferences together, hung art shows to numerous to count, and shared a very similar philosophy in our teaching. When he became the MPS Art Coordinator, I much appreciated the dedication and enthusiasm he displayed while in that position. We were very supportive of each other, which certainly resulted in a win-win situation.

In his art, he strongly reinforced his Christian faith, most notably with his beautiful, faceted stained glass windows, installed in numerous churches around the state, and beyond, and with some of his well executed bronze sculptures as well.

Jim was good man, caring, talented, an excellent teacher, a great father, and certainly an asset to Midland, especially the art community. He leaves an enviable legacy, as a teacher and an artist, about which you, his family, can be proud.

God bless you all,
Dave Morrison.

Dear Mary and Hop family I am so sorry about the passing of your father. I remember "Hoppy" and my dad Bud Lucas, meeting regularly for coffee with various other retired MPSchool teachers some years back. They named their collective "The old farts club" where they bragged about their kids, told tales of the past, and continued their friendship! Mr. Hop was an amazing source of energy and creativity for generations of students and the entire community. Sending condolences and peace to all.

We're so sorry to note the passing of Mr Hopfensperger. We have lots of great memories of Pop Hop, including helping in his studio when he was creating the stained glass designs for the new Blessed Sacrament church. It's not often that you can say someone was truly important to his community, but Pop Hop really pushed the envelope of art in Midland and contributed greatly to the quality of life in Midland.

As kids, it was fun to go across the street to check out Mr. Hop's latest projects which often took up the garage and the driveway. His energy, creativity and unique style live on in his art. Deepest condolences to all of the Hops.

I had Mr. Hop as an art teacher for many years at Sugnet and I think one year at Northeast. He pushed all of his students to create art that they could be proud of no matter their age and inspired my passion for creating and appreciating art that continues to this day. I remember being so excited to learn he had a daughter my age--I liked Marie as soon as I met her on the Sugnet playground and am glad to still know her. Peace to your family.

I also remember his "Name the Baby" contest. He said the baby was a boy and the name had to start with J or M. Everyone in the class submitted a name. He picked Jay.

Worked with Hoppy for many years on the Dow Corning Christmas Card Contest. He was forever optimistic and upbeat. A great artist and a great educator. And I was proud to call The Hopfenspergers my neighbors growing up in Midland.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I wish I could be at the service to see all of the Hops. You were like family to me. Pop Hop was a great man always so kind to me. I'm forever grateful for the years of Coney Dogs, root beer and rock concerts. Glad I was able to see my best friend John and Jeanine last fall and heard of their gratitude and respect for Jed and all he did in the final years. I know the final years were a long goodbye. A great man is now at peace.

My sympathy at your loss. "Mr Hop" gave me my first real job as a carhop at the Boondocks, where I met my future husband on our first day of work. He enjoyed taking credit for it. Our first date was of course at the Dog and Suds.
He influenced his students in so many ways, and mine was certainly not in my art. I remember our talks at the picnic table behind the Docks and his advice to this day. My condolences to the whole family.

John,
I never had your dad in school but I can't tell you how many pounds of hamburger I made into chili dog topping the summer of 1967 at the Dog N Suds. I even remember there was a stock car raced by Mike Lince at Tri City Speedway with Dog N Suds help! Thanks to your dad for teaching me some of life's lessons that summer. May his soul rest in peace.

Hoppy, was a true work of art! Was at Northeast 59 thru 61 and MHS class of 64. I was not one of your art students, but I managed the Dog N Suds drive for you the first summer that you owned it. You will be missed by all who knew you!

Mr. Hop was very a very special person. During the course of my art career I was frequently asked where I went to school. I always replied Northeast Intermediate under Mr Hop, '64. He was more than a great teacher, he was an inspiration to become part of a modern renaissance, where creators and thinkers and people of conscious make a better world for the greater population. I'm still dreaming about it even though there is significant disappointment in the glacial pace to get us there.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Lost my Dad 16 years ago and know what you're going through.

Tell Jeannine that I wish I could have been at the funeral, but I'm currently out of the country.
