Donald M. Winger, 75, died on Dec. 17, 2015 at McClaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac. Don was born June 30, 1940, in Saranac, Mich., to the Rev. J. William and Eileen (Dunkle) Winger. Don graduated from Pinckney High School in 1958 and from Olivet College in 1962.
Don was coordinator of church relations for Olivet College from 1962-1966. From August 1966 to January 1967 he attended United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in New Brighton, Minn.
On March 25, 1967, he became sports editor of the Midland Daily News, a position he held for 36 years until he retired in 2003 as executive sports editor. Don was a former president of the Michigan Associated Press Sports Editors Association, and was an award winning writer in the Amateur Softball Association writing contest. He spent 40 years as scorekeeper and public address announcer for the Michigan American Legion State Baseball tournament.
Don was an active layman of the Midland United Church of Christ, where he was a lay speaker and liturgist. Don has been inducted into the Olivet College Athletic Hall of Fame, Midland County Sports Hall of Fame, the Northwood University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Honor. Don was a long time member of the Midland Kiwassee Kiwanis Club.
Don is survived by his brother, Douglas (Beverly) Winger of Midland. He is also survived by three nephews, Darrell Winger of Bakersfield, Calif., David Winger of Lewisville, Texas and Greg Winger of Wellsburg, Iowa; and one niece, Traci Herek of Bay City. Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, John William Winger II; sister, Constance Kay; sister-in-law, Joan Winger; and his niece Sheila Cole.
Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at the Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Roger Pancost of the United Church of Christ officiating. Friends may visit with the family at Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Don's ashes will be interned at the UCC Memorial Gardens.
