Jack F. Mills, 87, passed away on March 28, 2015. Jack was born in Galesburg, Ill., on Feb. 3, 1928, to Charles and Madge Mills. After graduating from Galesburg H.S., he earned his B.A. at Knox College in 1950 and his Ph.D. at the State University of Iowa in 1953. Dr. Mills then did a post doctorate at the University of Illinois. Dr. Mills served as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps from 1954-1956. He married the former Darlene M. Crouch on Aug. 15, 1953, in Iowa. She preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 2009.

Jack spent his entire career with The Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, where he rose to senior research chemist and held multiple patents and authored numerous technical articles for professional publications in the field of halogens. After retiring in 1986, he worked as a consultant for OmniTech, where his vast knowledge of bromine and chlorine technology was often sought out. He also was a volunteer consultant for many years on the Saginaw Wastewater Treatment Board.

Jack was a member of the Phi Lambda Upsilon Honorary Chemical Society, National Society of Scabbard and Blade, and Sigma Xi Society. He was also a longtime member of the Midland Kiwanis Club.

After retiring in 1986, Jack and Darlene spent their time traveling abroad, antiquing and adding to their many unique collections. Jack's main hobby was his family and he will always be remembered for his devotion to his wife and children. As a young father, it was not uncommon to see him leading a pack of kids—not just his own six-to the pool or playground in Plymouth Park and cheering them on at sporting events.

Jack is survived by his children, Jackie (Randy) Bersch, Richard (Sheila Wing) Mills, Susan (Dale) Preslar, Sharon (Mike) Donnelly, and Doug (Karen) Mills; grandchildren, Robert Bersch, Matthew Bersch, Rachel Mills, Rebecca Mills, Ben (Kele) Preslar, Tricia (Doug) Shaffer, Tracy (Andy) Little, Joel Donnelly, Jack Donnelly and Nick Holcomb; four great-grandchildren; and beloved niece and nephew, Teresa (Dan) Gabaldon and Chuck (Sandy) Mills. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Charlene Mills; wife, Darlene; and son, Joel.

The Mills family extends our heartfelt thanks to Sheila Wing and her family, Karri (Robert) Allen, Matthew (Kara) Wing and Hailey and Taylor Allen for the loving care and attention they provided our father over the last five years.

A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for July 25, 2015, at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home.
