Henry MENDLER Obituary
The morning of June 8, 2018, our beloved Henry Mendler passed away peacefully at his home in Atlanta just 10 days shy of his 93rd birthday and 30th wedding anniversary to his survived and dearest wife, Suzanne Lawton. Henry was born to Martin and Ester Mendler on June 18, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY. Smart as a whip, he was accepted and attended M.I.T. at age 16. At 18 he left M.I.T. to join the WWII war effort as an Engineer in the U.S. Army. Upon his return he immediately went to work, raising a family and barely earning a living at $25 per week, yet still managed to give $25 per month towards the support of his grandmother. Boundless energy, fearlessness and drive lead him to form his own general contracting company, Major Builders, which he continued to lead until shortly before his passing. A self-made man, his savings moved from a container in his closet directly to real estate investments in Manhattan. His interests continued to follow him from city life to the countryside. From the Berkshires to Virginia, Florida to the Carolinas he was a man as comfortable in the seat of a tractor or a horse as he was in a suit, sitting at his desk. Henry believed in living life to the fullest and as a mentor, taught us all to do the same. Though in body he will be truly missed, his legacy and lesson's will be with us forever. A man of tremendous strength, support and generosity. Easily said, he was one of a kind. A graveside service will be held at 10:00AM on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at: Beth David Cemetery, 300 Elmont Road, Elmont, New York 718.343.4000. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UVA Cancer Center/Lymphoma Research Fund and mailed to UVA Health Foundation, PO Box 400331, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4331 or made online at (cancer.uvahealth.com).
