Herbert Rutherford PORTER Jr. Obituary
Herbert Rutherford Porter, Jr., 86, of Manasquan, NJ, and Palm Beach, FL., passed away peacefully Monday, January 29th surrounded by his loving family. Born in Newark, NJ, Herb's family later moved to Rutherford, NJ where he spent his childhood years. Herb earned his undergraduate degree from Westminster College and a Master of Business Administration from New York University. Herb had a deep love of sports of any kind and played football, basketball and baseball through high school and at Westminster College where the local newspaper hailed him as "a man no team has been able to stop." Herb began his long and celebrated career in printing at OB Johnson Press in New York City. In 1970, he set out on his own, founding Howard Press, which he opened in a small storefront in Roselle, NJ with only three employees. Almost thirty years later, after being honored as finalist for the 1997 New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year award, he sold Howard Press. At the time it had over three hundred dedicated employees. Upon his retirement, he and his beloved wife Alina spent time between the two places Herb loved the most, the Manasquan River and Palm Beach, FL. A man of many interests, Herb was a voracious reader, a World War II history buff, a tennis player, a boater and what many would call a "car guy." Herb not only loved automobiles but the history behind them. He took great pleasure in collecting cars and sharing his passion with friends and family. Herb was a generous man who was quick with sound advice for any situation. He enjoyed the sun set hours along the Manasquan River with a Beefeater Martini or a scotch (only Famous Grouse) in hand, listening to Big Band, blues and jazz music and conversing with family and friends. On more than one occasion those conversations would lead to disappointed but hopeful talk of his beloved New York Giants and New York Mets. Herb is survived by his wife Alina, sons Buzz Porter of Sea Girt, NJ and Scott Porter of Westfield, NJ, daughter Jill Milne and her husband Scott Milne of Manasquan, NJ, son Paul Jablonski and his wife Amy Jablonski of New York City, and daughter Sylvia Jablonski of New York City. He also leaves behind his brother Jeff Porter and his wife Charlotte Porter, his brother Robert Porter and his wife Bobbie Porter, and his grandchildren Tyler Savage, Connor Savage, MacKenzie Savage, Jessica Frost and her husband Chris, and Jacqueline Porter, and Sharkie his favorite dog. The family will host a celebration of his life and ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Herb's name to Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation at: (https://1409.thankyou4caring.org/pages/donation-page---jersey-shore).
