James P. SLATTERY II Obituary
James P. Slattery II, age 67, passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, June 27, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center after an 11 year battle with cancer. James was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 6, 1951, the second of James Slattery, Sr. and Margaret Connell Slattery's five children. He is survived by his sisters Barbara and Colleen (Martin), and brothers William (Patricia) and Thomas. A graduate of Power Memorial Academy and St. Johns University, James worked as a licensed certified public accountant, a Controller and VP for North American Reinsurance Corporation and Swiss Reinsurance America Corporation, and an SVP and President of Insurance Operations for Allegheny Corporation. He was a straight shooter, a quiet, gentle, and thoughtful leader. James lost his first wife, Adele in 1976 and married Joanne Dolan in 1985. James and Joanne had three boys, James III, Kenneth, and Michael, and a daughter-in-law, Niki. A true family man, he loved golfing with his wife and sons, and being frustrated by the New York Jets, Mets, and Rangers with his boys. James was a dedicated and generous philanthropist. He served as chairman and President for Mercy Home for Children for over 30 years. Through his work, he ensured that Mercy Home will be able to serve men, women and children with developmental disabilities for generations to come. A man of immense faith, James was inducted into the Order of Malta and worked as a Eucharistic Minister. James and his family are eternally grateful for the loving and devoted friends and family that filled James' life with happiness and comfort. The Slatterys also thank the amazing staff of MSKCC for their tireless and compassionate work. On June 5, 2018 James felt fulfilled and blessed, as he embraced a new role as "Poppy II", welcoming his first grandson, James Slattery IV.
