Jan WEST Obituary
WEST, Jan Jan West died peacefully in his sleep on November 3, 2017. He was born in Haarlem, Netherlands on January 14, 1926 and has outlived his wife, Mary Lee, as well as his three sisters in Holland. Jan West is survived by the descendants of his siblings. After WWII, Jan volunteered in the Dutch Royal Army and was stationed in the Dutch Indies (Indonesia). Jan was a paratrooper during his service for the Netherlands and was always very proud of his accomplishments. The Army taught him life skills such as discipline and pride, and these were characteristics that he never forgot during his ninety years. Upon return from Indonesia, he started his career in the hotel business in Amsterdam. Jan emigrated to the U.S. in 1957 and first began a job in New York. After two years, Jan was offered a great opportunity to work for Marriott International, Inc. He excelled in the hotel world as a result of his keen attention to detail, discipline, and elegance. Jan held many senior positions within the organization and the Marriott family came to rely on Jan for many projects. Jan was an avid reader, an art collector and a fine wine collector and connoisseur. Along with his deceased wife, Mary Lee, he lived for many decades in Arlington, VA. Together, they purchased an apartment on Singer Island where they vacationed during the winter months. After Jan's retirement he moved permanently to Palm Beach. He was a member of The Beach Club for many years as well as an active member of the Sk?l International. Jan will be sorely missed by all of his friends and especially by Johannes (Han) Pigmans a close friend for over 67 years.
