Lloyd Wheaton BOWERS, Jr. Obituary
May 28, 1943 - January 19, 2018 Lloyd W. Bowers, Jr., of New York City, Southampton, NY and Lake Forest, IL, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2018 after enjoying a week of Croquet School at the National Croquet Center and visiting friends in Palm Beach. Lloyd was born in Chicago, IL in 1943 to Lloyd W. Bowers and Frances Clow Bowers. Mrs. Bowers was a member of the Clow family in Chicago and Lake Forest. Lloyd's great-great-grandfather, James B. Clow, was the founder a cast iron pipe manufacturer, and Lloyd's great-grandfather, grandfather and uncle were CEOs of the Company. Lloyd's paternal great- grandfather, Lloyd W. Bowers, was Solicitor General of the United States, appointed by President Taft. President Taft's son Robert married Lloyd's great-aunt Martha Bowers. The President's brother, Horace Taft, founded the Taft School for Boys, which Lloyd attended in 1959. Lloyd graduated from Lake Forest Academy in 1961, Yale University in 1965 as a Ranking Scholar, and earned a Joint Masters Degree from Columbia University's Schools of International Affairs and of Business Administration. Lloyd spent most of his career working in finance at Bache & Co., Dean Witter and Smith Barney. Upon retiring from finance, Lloyd became a real estate broker with Douglas Elliman and at his death was a self employed real estate broker and investor. In New York, Lloyd was a member of the Racquet and Tennis Club, the Metropolitan Opera Guild, a member of the Board of the Lynn Chase Wildlife Foundation and a member of the Tynesdale Society. In Southampton, Lloyd was a member of the Bathing Corporation, the Southampton Club, and the Westhampton Mallet Club. He was a former member of the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley, the Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest and the Racquet Club of Chicago. Lloyd is survived by his sisters, Frances C. Bowers of Deer Park, IL, Jane B. Davis (Timothy) of Denver, CO, and Martha Bowers of Brooklyn, NY. A memorial honoring Lloyd will be held in New York later in the year.
