GOLDNER, Norbert M. Caf? L' Europe's Founder Sunday, January 14th, 2018, the fine dining culinary and business world lost a great leader. Born in Berlin in 1940, Norbert survived the ravages of World War II to forge forward, seeking to achieve his goal of excellence in the hospitality industry. He managed the acclaimed NYC restaurant "The Sign of The Dove," in the mid 1960's to the early 1970's. In 1972 he and his then business partner, Titus Letschert, opened the first Caf? L'Europe in Sarasota Florida. In 1980, Norbert, together with his wife Lidia, opened the Palm Beach Caf? L'Europe to sensational reviews. Soon awards and accolades followed for superb food, outstanding wine selections, service and ambiance and the creation of a unique Palm Beach dining experience. An original recipient of "The Travel-Holiday Award," Norbert was instrumental in the transformation of the award organization which evolved into the DiRona Awards, (Distinguished Restaurants of North America,) of which Norbert was a Founding Member and Director. Chef Goldner was a creative and gifted perfectionist who had the talent, imagination and expertise, which thrilled guests and industry colleagues for over 50 years. In addition to his culinary talents, he was a respected business leader in the world of hospitality. He was the recipient of the Palm Beach Leadership Award, Nation's Restaurant News, "Fine Dining Hall of Fame Award" and the ultimate recognition in restaurant awards, "The Ivy Award" by Restaurant and Institutions, magazine. Additionally, Norbert's work resulted in a multitude of varied notable local, national and international awards. He is survived by his wife, Lidia Goldner.
