CHUILLI, Ernest Joseph

Captain Ernest Joseph Chuilli, of Palm Beach Gardens, 89, passed away July 12, 2013 at the Hospice of Palm Beach County after a brief illness. A retired U.S. Navy officer, Captain Chuilli is survived by his wife of 66 years, Florence Catherine Cross, and a sister, Antoinette Fisher of Flemington, New Jersey. He is also survived by six children: Barbara Banta and husband Greg of Las Vegas, Nevada; Kathryn Chuilli of New York City, New York; Lynn Copeland and husband Howard of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Stephen Chuilli and wife Debbie of Jupiter, Florida; Timothy Chuilli of Coral Gables, Florida; and Richard Chuilli and wife Lianna Fotieo of Orlando, Florida; as well as six grandchildren: James, Manny, Catherine Florence, Anthony, Nicholas, and Alex; and a great-grandson, Anthony. Both Captain Chuilli and his wife were from South Amboy, New Jersey. A graduate of the New York State Maritime Academy, he served in the Merchant Marine during World War II before joining the Navy. His service included postings as operations officer aboard the USS Little Rock, the flag ship of the Sixth Fleet; and command of the USS O'Hare, with a tour of duty in Vietnam. He headed the Atlantic Fleet Data Processing Service Center at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia, before retiring to Palm Beach Gardens in 1975. Captain Chuilli was decorated by the Merchant Marine with the Atlantic Theatre, Mediterranean Theatre, Pacific Theatre, and World War II Victory medals; Navy honors include the Navy Occupation Ribbon and the Navy Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary, National Defense Service, Naval Reserve and Vietnam Service medals. He received a BA from the U.S. Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and an MBA from George Washington University. A Viewing will be held Wednesday July 17, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Royal Palm Funeral Home, 5601 Greenwood Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Saint Clare Catholic Church, 821 Prosperity Farms Road, North Palm Beach, Florida followed by an honor-guard military burial at 12:45 PM at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, Florida.
