Angelo Argea Obituary

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

ANGELO G. “GEORGE” ARGEA (ARGEROPOULOS) Age 75, formerly of Canton and more recently residing in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, died peacefully at the home of his nephew in Canton on the night of October 10, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. Angelo was born on November 7, 1929 in Canton to the late George and Mary Argeropoulos. Angelo enlisted and served in the Army from 1949 to 1953 and saw action in Korea. When Angelo completed his military service he relocated to Las Vegas, NV where he drove cab and caddied at the Desert Inn Golf Club. Angelo caddied for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Vic Damone, Louis Prima, the former owner of the Desert Inn, Wilbur Clark, and Hank Greenspan, the publisher of the Las Vegas Sun, and other well-known celebrities during his stint at the Desert Inn. In 1963 Angelo was asked to go to Palm Springs, CA and caddy in the Pro Am at the Bob Hope Desert Classic. Angelo put his name next to a pro who was not expected to play because of bursitis. The pro, Jack Nicklaus, decided to play and won the tournament. Angelo caddied for Jack in the next two tournaments which were won by Jack. Angelo went to work for Jack full-time in 1965. Angelo caddied for Jack in over 40 of his wins. He caddied for Jack in the US Open, the British Open, and many TPC and PGA Championship events. Angelo retired from carrying Jack's bag in 1983 and began working for Golden Bear International measuring golf courses and making yardage books of courses built by Jack Nicklaus and sons. Angelo is also credited with setting up caddy programs at Jack Nicklaus' developments Old Marsh CC and Frenchman's Creek CC. The event which made Angelo proudest occurred on March 29, 1999 when he was inducted into the PGA Golf Hall of Fame Caddy Section in St. Augustine, FL. Angelo married the love of his life, Chris Hughes, on Valentine's Day 1980. Angelo had many friends. Everyone who knew Angelo enjoyed his affable and easy going personality. He never had a bad word for anybody. He will be missed by friends and family. In addition to his parents Angelo was preceded in death by his wife Chris Argea, brother Harry “The Head” Argea, sister and brother-in-law Helen and George Stathakaros, brother-in-law Demetrious Tsalpatouros, nephews Thomas Tsalpatouros and George Tsalpatouros. The family wishes to thank Aultman Hospice and the aides from Aultman Home Care for making Angelo's last days as comfortable as possible. We also would like to thank Dr. Zeigler who took great care of Angelo. And lastly, we would like to thank Mr. Jack Nicklaus for supporting Angelo during and at the end of his life.
