Roy CHERNOCK Obituary
CHERNOCK, Roy Coach "C" Roy Chernock, died peacefully at TrustBridge Hospice in West Palm Beach, Florida on September 4, 2018 at the age of 90. Roy was the beloved husband of 63 years to the late Ethel Chernock. He is survived by his daughter, Debi Chernock; his son, Joe Chernock and his wife, Maria. His grandson, Brad and his wife, Diana, his granddaughter, Dana and great-grandson, Michael. In addition, Roy is survived by Sally and Murray Gottesfeld, Albert Mustakoff and many nephews and nieces. Born in Jamaica, New York to Gussie and Louis Chernock, Roy graduated from N.Y.U. with a Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree. As both an athlete and a coach, Roy has been a winner in Track and Field for over 65 years. After coaching at Oceanside High School on Long Island, he moved on to the collegiate level in 1967. He had stops at C.W. Post College and Baruch College. Before coming to the College of William and Mary in 1977, he had a short stay as an assistant coach at Princeton. Since his retirement from William and Mary in 1990, Roy has coached at high schools across Palm Beach County. He has coached at John I. Leonard, Suncoast, Wellington, Palm Beach Central and Seminole Ridge. Roy has coached his share of star athletes, including Ron Stonitsch, CW Post; Craig Masback, Princeton and former CEO of USA Track and Field, Vin Lananna, track coach and assistant athletic director at the University of Oregon and former coach of the USA Olympic team and Pierre Garcon, John I. Leonard, now with the San Francisco 49ers. When Roy was in his late 60's, he held Masters sprint records in the 100 and 200 meters and the 100 meter hurdles. He has been named to the following Halls of Fame: Oceanside High School, C.W. Post College, NYU and William and Mary. He was also Head Track Coach for the USA Maccabiah team 1973 and 1977 and Head Coach for the USA National team vs USSR-1974, England-1987 and Great Britain-1993. An avid golfer, the highlight of his golfing career was shooting his age (73) at Addison Reserve in Delray Beach. A Celebration of Roy's Life will take place on September 22 at 10:30AM at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 5411 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach.
