RYLAND EDWARD ROBBINS Ryland E. Robbins, 87 of Jupiter Island, FL passed away at his home on Thursday, February 24, 2011. He was born April 26, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Willard and Grace Robbins. He grew up in Teaneck, NJ and spent summers in his youth with his family in Franconia, NH in the White Mountains. During his sophomore year at Dartmouth College he enlisted in the Army (1942). He was in the 9th Air Force Division, stationed in Haguenau, France. He received special training in armament. After World War II he continued his studies at Dartmouth (Tuck School of Business) and graduated with a degree in Economics. At Dartmouth he was voted "Most likely to Succeed" in his class. He graduated as the class of 1944. Upon graduation, he joined the family greeting card business; Sunshine Art Studios Inc., in New York City, which was started by his grandfather, Edward and his father, Willard. Ryland was treasurer, and a successful businessman. He was responsible for growing and expanding the business to Springfield, MA; East Longmeadow, MA; and Reno, NV. He retired in 1985. Ryland lived in Longmeadow, MA for over 25 years and was active in various Civic groups in the town. He was a baseball coach for the Longmeadow Little League Association. He enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, skiing, golf and photography. Ryland pursued his interests in Real Estate through North East Land Development Trust Company, and was owner and responsible for building the Hampden Country Club in Hampden, MA, The Twin Rinks Skating Club in Enfield, CT, and various homes and condominiums. He had a love of animals and the family spent summer at their farm raising Black Angus and Holstein cows in Westerlo, NY. He donated generously through the years and was part of an esteem group of founders at Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, FL. Ryland is survived by his beloved wife, Denise LeClair-Robbins and two step daughters, Tara McDowell (Yarmouth Port, MA),Carrie Cirillo (Springfield, MA) and his eleven children; Helene Robbins (Hancock, NH), William Robbins (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Mary Robbins (Bradford, MA), Anne R. Tansantisuk (Newton, MA), Patricia Bigelow (Wolfeboro, NH), Edward R. Robbins (Wilbraham, MA), Joan Loughlin (Ridgefield, CT), Richard Robbins (Tipp City, OH), Michelle Robbins (Middleburg, VA), John Robbins (Longmeadow, MA) Kathleen Robbins (Middleburg, VA). He had 16 grandchildren, (one deceased, Johb Orsi) and three great-grandchildren. His sister, Betty Otorowski (Bainbridge Island, WA) and her two children, Christopher Otorowski (Washington) and Julie Hohmeister (New Hampshire). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on March 11, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Jude's Catholic Church, 204 N US HWY 1, Tequesta, FL33469 A Memorial Service and burial will take place in Springfield, MA at a later date in April. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ryland E.
