Age 82, Florence Mills McCray passed away peacefully Thursday night, February 7 at JFK Medical Center. She was surrounded by her five children and several grandchildren, at her bedside,. She was a native of Palatka, Florida, and has resided at the Boynton Beach Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility since April, 2009 when she suffered a stroke and lost her sight. She was the youngest daughter of Clarence and Mariah (Alexander) Pollard of Palatka, Fl. She attended Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy in Jacksonville, and graduated from Central Academy High School in Palatka, Fl. She completed two years at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Allen University in South Carolina, and a Master's degree from Florida A&M University (Tallahassee) in Early Childhood Education. She also earned credits toward a Specialist's degree in Special Education. She was married to the entrepreneur and owner of "Mills Grocery Store," the late Willie Mills in Palatka. Florence taught elementary school for a total of thirty-five years in Putnam and Palm Beach Counties. She was very active in her churches, Bethel A.M.E. (Palatka), and St. Paul A.M.E. (Boynton Beach) where she was a "Songbird" in both choirs. She was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge, and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. She was very active in community service organizations, and worked diligently to get people to the polls to vote. She moved to Palm Beach County in 1970, where she met and married the late, Julius McCray, who preceded her in death in 1975. Others who preceded her in death were her parents, her sisters (Blandina Harge and Lillian Lewis), three brothers (Richard, William and Charles), and an aunt, Hattie Greene. She leaves to cherish the memories of her great "mother-wit," her five devoted children: Florencia Mills Boldon (Jim), Vontell Willeatha Mills, William Thomas Mills, Jr., Lawrence Derek Mills (Ann), Millicent Mills Stevens, 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren (with one on the way), and a host of adoring nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, relatives and loving, faithful friends. She will be remembered for her strength, resilience, deep love and commitment to God and her family, as well as her charitable contributions to the needy, and her devotion to educating children. A celebration of Florence's life will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 1:00 PM at St. Paul A.M.E. Church; 315 Martin Luther King Blvd., Boynton Beach, FL. Viewing will be on Thursday, February 14, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the church. Services are entrusted to Shuler's Memorial Chapel, 606 W. Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33444, (561) 265-0622. Burial will be at Boynton Beach Memorial Park, in Boynton Beach, FL.
