Ralph GLENDINNING Obituary

GLENDINNING,
Ralph Orton
Ralph Orton Glendinning was Promoted to Glory on January 5, 2017. He was born in Rahway, NJ on November 19, 1923 to John Edmond Glendinning and Mildred Potter Rowe Glendinning. He was an amazing self-made man with numerous accomplishments and interests. After one year of college at Rensselaer Polytechnic, where he attended on a scholarship, World War II started and he enlisted in the Navy. After some training, he switched to the Marines becoming a combat pilot on the aircraft carrier Bunker Hill from which he flew 87 missions, including the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His plane was hit by enemy fire on a raid over Tokyo, and he crashed off the coast of Japan with a leaky life raft. A plane from his squadron dropped a raft, and the first wave brought it to him. During his time in the raft, he made a promise to God that, if he would save him, he would spend his life helping others. God granted his wish, and he fulfilled that promise for his remaining life. After leaving the service he married his sweetheart, Ruth Langmack in Santa Barbara, CA. They moved to New Jersey where he applied to Princeton University. He graduated summa cum laude in two and one half years. He did this on the G.I. Bill, and worked seven jobs during that time. His son, Randall was the first baby born at Princeton. He went to work for Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati, learning all aspects of their business, brands and mass media. He and Ruth had two more children, Scott and Janet. He planned to stay at Proctor & Gamble forever, but, after twelve years on the job, he was told by his superiors that he was too creative to ever be in top management. He had no choice but to leave. He moved his family to Connecticut, and started Glendinning Company on $1,000 savings. He got three clients, and as he got three more he would hire a friend from Proctor & Gamble. He ended up hiring around 100 people from them. People were eager to work for him, and the company grew as a consulting and marketing firm working for over 250 major companies. He was a cofounder of MBI, Inc. Its divisions included The Danbury Mint, Postal Commemorative Society, Easton Press, and The Heritage Book Club. He retired from Glendinning Co. in 1985. He was inducted into the marketing Hall of Fame in 1979, and is recognized as starting the First Marketing Promotion Company in the World. After retirement he actively pursued looking for the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine, along with his longtime friend, Rick Peck. Neither of them found it, but had fun looking for it. Ralph also wrote a couple of novels, and became active in The Salvation Army becoming a member of the National Advisory Board. He was one of the three first life members on that board. In later years he became a Director of AVX Aircraft Company. This company fascinated him. He was predeceased by his parents Ed and Mil Glendinning, brother Bruce, sister Ailene Dyer, first wife Ruth Glendinning, second wife Mary Jackson Glendinning. He is survived by wife, Ann, sons, Randall (Sue), Scott, and daughter, Jan, step-daughter, Beth Collins, step-sons, Eric Collins (Yvonne), Robert Jackson (Megan), and Charles Jackson. He has nine grandchildren, Jeffrey Jackson, Brett Jackson
(Alessandra), Allison Jackson, Amanda Glendinning, Jonathan Glendinning, Jacqueline Glendinning, Mackenzie Glendinning Ashton (Scott), Ginger Glendinning, and Phoenix Glendinning. His step grandchildren are, Gregory Smith, Charles Beck, Leilani Collins, Trevor Collins, Ashley Collins Lee (Andrew), great-grandsons, Zander and Zane Lee. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at The Salvation Army West Palm Beach Corps at 2122 Palm Beach Lake Blvd. Family will greet guests starting at 1:00PM. Funeral will be at 2:00PM. Reception to follow. For online condolences, please visit TaylorandModeen.com

I did not know Ralph personally, but he is married to my cousin (Mildred to me,but Ann to Ralph and friends). I am grateful to Ralph and Mildred because of the way they helped my mother and sister Rhonda. Being retired Navy myself, I was able to tell him on the phone that he and all the WWII vets were all heros because of their service and sacrifice to our country during that war. Ralph is now in the arms of God with his fellow marines who left before he did.

Jane and I knew Ralph and Molly from Connecticut and Great Harbor when he asked me to join the Company for a Special Project. Upon completion I stayed on. We enjoyed many great travels together. Played lots of golf and was on hand in England when Mario Andretti won the World Grand Prix Formular I for our Clients team. I was instramental in their relocating to Lost Tree Village in N. Palm Beach. A great generous man.

I remember Ralph from Great Harbor Cay in the Bahamas. He was our neighbor for many years on Sugar Beach. There was a great group of friends from there that traveled for many years together playing golf. We spent a lot of time on the water fishing and looking for treasure. He was a good friend to my parents.

To whoever reads this message.

I first met Ralph on a World Cruise on Holland America. I have an interest in WW2 history particularly in the SW Pacific. Ralph would tell me about his time and experiences on the Bunker Hill in 1944. I understand he flew Corsairs and, as he related to me, he shot down a "betty" bomber. At the time of our meeting he presented me with a copy of "The Saga Of Marine Fighter Squadron VMF 221" I have read this book many times, in fact reading the book has further enticed me to persue my readings of the war in the SW Pacific. I often think of Ralph and the stories he related to me. He wrote a short message in the book he gave me, "looking forward to when we should meet again". I never saw Ralph again but I will never forget him. To his family, the deepest sympathies are extended from myself and wife Bronwyn at hearing of his passing, only today September 30 2017. RIP friend. Robert and Bronwyn Newton. Australia.

My condolences to you and family, Ann. Ralph was an inspiration to me, but most of all, he made you, Ann, happy and secure, my dear friend. Your kindness and generosity as a couple knew no bounds and I am eternally grateful for that - may he rest in peace and your days be filled with wonderful memories, as mine are.

In mid-1962 I received a call at P&G asking if I would like to talk to Ralph about joining his new company as its 4th member. For the next 7 years I had the best learning experience of my life. Not only that but I had my eyes opened to the world and its many opportunities and challenges. Without that experience the rest of my life would have been very different from the varied and rewarding one my family and I have led.

Ralph, another one of my WWII heros has left us. You most certainly left your generous and loving footprints in the sands of time. That reunion with your squadron mates who have gone on before you will be a wonderful U. S. Marine Corps party. Thank you for all you did for my mother and sister. May God bless you and your family.5

What an honor to be called your friend. You were the most amazing man with a loving, generous heart and what a legacy you left us. You and Sweet Ann swept (or should I say drilled) your way into our heart and lives when you purchased Don's drilling rig in New Mexico. What good times we had and wonderful memories. Don and I were so honored to be mentioned in your family book.

Ralph, I know you'll have many, many stars in your crown. You totally fulfilled your promise to God to help people which was as natural to you as breathing. Rest in peace, no more pain, dear friend!!!!

Ralph, You will be missed, but not forgotten. Lorenda and I want to thank you so much for you kind words, generosity, and mostly your kindness. This world needs more people like you, so we don't forget to do what's most important. Caring and helping others. Ann, Lorenda and I miss you so much. Hope all is well with you and your family. Jessica called me last night and told me about Ralph. We know that you have endured a lot of trials. The Lord works in ways we will never understand. Please take care of yourself and keep your head up. Ralph would of wanted it that way, for you to be strong and have faith. We love you so much. Todd and Lorenda Smith
