Richard Oren Hicks Obituary
RICHARD OREN HICKS Richard Oren "Dick" Hicks, of Paradise, passed away peacefully at age 87 on September 23, 2017 at Hospice House in Paradise in the company of his wife, Floy. Born on August 1, 1930 to Charles A. and Sylvia I. Hicks, he was raised in the small town of Commerce, Oklahoma, where his boyhood friends included Yankee great Mickey Mantle. At the beginning of World War II, Dick's family moved to Napa, Califor-nia, where his father went to work as a welder helping to build ships for the United States Navy at nearby Mare Island. After graduating from Napa High School, Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was among the first waves of Marines to land on the beaches at Incheon on September 15, 1950 during the amphibious counter-of-fensive early in the Korean War that event-ually led to the United States and allied forces retaking Seoul from the North Korean Army. After returning from Korea, Dick married in 1953, and after working for a year in his father's automobile repair shop in Napa, moved his young family to Fairfield where he went to work as a police officer for the Fairfield Police Depart-ment. After achieving the rank of Captain, Dick left the Department in 1962, and moved his family to Chico where he went to work as an insurance salesman for the California State Automobile Association (a member of the American Automobile Association, "AAA"). Dick was outgoing and enjoyed his work tremendously. He was an AAA insurance agent for the Chico and Paradise areas for 35 years before retiring in 1997. Dick served in the Paradise Honor Guard. He enjoyed tinkering and working on cars and small engines. He could fix almost anything. He was a private pilot and loved to fly. Dick was also an avid fisherman, and has the record for catching the largest trout for 2011 at Collins Lake (12 pounds). Dick is survived by his wife, Helen "Floy" Hicks, of Paradise, son Rick Hicks and his wife Kathy of Sonoma, daughter Cyndi Lycan and her husband Scott of Mante-ca, daughter Ashley Wright and her husband Christian of Reno, and younger brother Norman Hicks and his wife Jackie of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
