Alan Petersen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 28, 2018.
September 5th, 1949 – July 18th, 2018

It is with enormous sadness that we share the news that Alan Petersen passed away on July 18, surrounded in Love by his wife, Wendy, sons, Jordan and Graham, and sister, Marla.

Alan was truly an inspiration. He was in his element in Park City, having made his home and life here for 30 years, loving its people, activities, beauty, and lifestyle. He exuded that enthusiasm to all who knew him.

Alan was born in Kankakee, IL. Selected as a Cadet for the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, he studied Civil Engineering, was a Flight Instructor, and flew C47's during the Vietnam War. Hired by Delta Air Lines in 1978, Alan moved to Park City in 1988 when the real joys of his life unfolded. First, he married Wendy Rocco, a Delta Flight Attendant, at St. Mary's Old Town Church in 1990; then, they were hugely blessed with their two sons in 1992 and 1995.

Retiring from Delta in 2005, Alan's passions were able to be woven with his love for his family, no matter the activity. He spent precious time over the years with his sons, endowing them with his love of flying, outdoor sports, adventure, travel, and problem-solving. He volunteered for 5 years as Scoutmaster, which culminated in both sons' achievement of Eagle Scout. Twenty years of houseboating trips to Lake Powell with Alan at the helm leave many loving and hilarious memories among family and friends.

Alan's daring and adventurous spirit, reflected in his hang-gliding, motorcycling, skiing, mountain biking, water-skiing, sailing, and scuba diving, made any Petersen outing a reason to have fun. One especially proud enjoyment for Alan was flying his 2-seat airplane, a Glasair, which he built with his Dad in the 1980's. Alan's incredible mechanical aptitude was generously taught and shared with his sons as they spent countless hours in his custom garage/shop. Not surprisingly, both sons honor their Dad's legacy in their chosen professions, reflecting their deep admiration of him.

For all of us who were touched by the gentle soul, tolerant spirit, man of moral courage, intelligent, humble, and sharp-witted husband, father, brother, son, and friend, we will miss Alan terribly. He aspired to leave the earth a better place than he found it, and indeed, he fulfilled his purpose.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Rocco Petersen; sons, Jordan and Graham Petersen; father, Ivan Petersen; and sister, Marla Petersen Seto. Alan is preceded by his mother, Lorena (Mayes) Petersen, and siblings, Linda, Mark, and Richard Petersen.

I so much appreciate this chance to briefly recall memories of my classmate from the Class of '71. I believe his classmates referred to Alan with the affectionate "Pete". That's my recolletion. An unfailingly modest and unflappable young man. Seems to me Alan had some flight experience...maybe even a private license? before he came to Colorado Springs. A handsome, soft spoken person. I can see his gait even now as he walked across the terazzo or climbed up the long and steep incline from the Athletic fields. And now I learn he built an acft w his son. He flew hang gliders... What a full and wonderful life but I am sure I lament with others that Alan's was a life ended earlier than any of his family or brothers expected. Wish I could have met Pete in later years. I really really miss my classmate. Best to all Darryl Wimberley aka Weepauw

I feel so lucky to have had "Pete" as a classmate at the Academy. Unflappable. Wry humor. Great pilot. Am going to remember and miss him.

With deepest sympathy to Alans family. My wife and I just found out about it today. Alan and I were very good friends in high school. He will be in my prayers always. So many memories over the years. Hard to comprehend right now. Please have Marla let me know about any memorials set up. So sorry for your loss. He was a very special person.

He never got rattled. He never wasted words. He was generous without being effusive, a guy with still waters always running deep.

I was lucky to have Pete as a classmate in 25th Squadron our first class year. He never got rattled. He never wasted words. He was generous without being effusive, a guy with still waters always running deep. Best to Pete's family...

I was very sorry to learn of Pete's passing. As Academy roommates first semester, Second Class year and 22nd Squadron classmates for two, we shared many memorable experiences together. Following graduation, we rendezvoused again at Columbus AFB, MS where we both completed air force pilot training. I remember Pete as always the quiet and self-assured one, ready to help anyone in need and always up for a good time.
A terrific guy who will be deeply missed, I regret that our paths never crossed again. Know that all of us who knew Pete share your loss, and I extend my sincerest condolences to Wendy, Jordan, Graham, and family. The world shines brighter today from the zest Pete brought to life's challenges and the impact he had on family and friends alike. Rest in peace Pete.

So sorry to hear about Alan passing away. I was a classmate at USAFA, a squadron mate in the EC-47, and worked with him at Delta. He was always fun and enjoyable to be around and will be missed.

I'll never forget the years spent on Lake Powell or our family get-togethers in Las Vegas. Alan was always someone I looked to talk to about engineering, flying, and outdoor activities and I hung on to every word he said. I miss him very much.
