Al Kaelin

KAELIN-Al Kaelin, whose "Around Town" cartoon feature appeared in the Tidings for 22 years, passed away April 13, 2006 Los Angeles, CA. Kaelin began his art teaching career at the old Mt. Carmel High School, and retired from the L.A. City schools in 1985 after working 43-1/2 years. As a free-lance artist he designed major political campaigns, teaching materials and advertising. He designed the official Archdiocesan poster commemorating Pope J ohn Paul's visit to L.A. in 1987. For 32 years he did promotional art and signs for St. Andrew's Priory Fall Festival. His 3rd grade teacher at Holy Cross School, Sister Geraldine, then Librarian at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, asked Al to start Return the Borrowed Books Week in 1953. The week has been celebrated nationally, since. Al served as President of All Saints Holy Name Society for 14 years as of 1998. He leaves his wife, Marion, and 4 children, Barney, Dan, John, and Julianna. Vigil Se rvices are scheduled at Funeraria del Angel Mirabal Mortuary for Friday April 21st at 7:00 p.m. with visitation from 6-9 p.m. Mass to take place at All Saints Catholic Church, Saturday April 22nd at 1:00 p.m. Burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, S.
