Elaine Pottenger Ward Obituary
Elaine Pottenger Ward, a life-long resident of Pasadena and San Marino, passed away July 12, 2018 surrounded by loving family members. Born October 8, 1934 to the late Dr. Robert T. Pottenger, Sr. and Helen Cornell Powers Pottenger Hops, she graduated from Polytechnic School, Westridge High School, and Scripps College in Claremont, CA. She was predeceased by her brothers, Dr. Robert T. Pottenger, Jr., Ronald C. Pottenger, and husbands James Robert Sands, Donald Brian Ward, and Clifford David Ward, Jr.Elaine was an active member of the Pasadena community involved with fundraising for Cancer Research, participated as a coach and leader in the Southern California and National Racewalking communities, and as a USAA Track and Field official. Elaine founded the North American Racewalking Foundation (NARF) and the North American Racewalking Institute (NARI). She published monthly racewalking newsletters, contributed articles to Masters News and Runners World, and published a number of books. Club members and coaching students will miss her enthusiasm and leadership.Elaine is survived by her daughters, Laura McConnaughey and Daphne Gill, their husbands, Kevin and Bill; six grandchildren: Ian, Scott, James, Leslie, Adam, and Dean; and great-granddaughter Naia Flor.She was buried in a quiet, family ceremony at Glendale Forest Lawn.
