His retirement years were filled with memorable family gatherings, monthly JPL retiree club luncheons, following sports, and throwing strikes at the bowling alley. He was an avid bowler and cherished time with his senior bowling league members. He loved to tell people the name of his current team, "Call 911." He was affectionately nicknamed "Gene, Gene, the bowling machine." Gene enjoyed social events and interacting with friends and new acquaintances.
He was over the moon when 125 friends and family attended his 90th birthday party. He was a witty storyteller and often concluded conversations with the quote, "Life has many ways."
Shortly before his passing he recited to hospital staff his treasured childhood poem, "I Have Only Just a Minute." Even at the end, Gene was bringing a smile to those around him.
