Dec. 19, 1928 - March 5, 2021 Helen Lucile Cloer passed away peacefully at her daughter's home on March 5, 2021. She was 92 years of age. Helen was born on December 19, 1928 in Alhambra, California to Joseph P. Sehy and Esther Vasey Sehy, both originally from Illinois but who met after they moved to California. Helen's father served in World War I; he passed away when Helen was only three years old. Helen's mother raised her alone while working as a bookkeeper and secretary. Helen was very close to her mother until she passed away in 1970. During her school days Helen was greatly influenced by her experiences at Camp Fire Girls summer camp at Camp Wasewagan. Helen graduated from Alhambra High School in 1946 from where she earned an AAUW scholarship. She graduated from UCLA in 1950 with a Bachelor's Degree in Art. Helen's husband and soulmate was Thomas Leroy Cloer, Jr., grandson of Porterville, California homesteaders Elisha and Sarah Ellen Cloer and son of Thomas Leroy Cloer and Catherine Inez Cloer both of Porterville. She met Tom at UCLA where he was her classmate. They were married on June 23, 1951. Helen and Tom settled in Monrovia, California where Helen was a housewife and devoted mother to their two children. Inspired by Tom's work-related travels, Helen piggy-backed family trips to Hawaii, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico. Other adventures through Yosemite, the Rockies and Southwest imparted a love of travel to her children. A 25th anniversary trip to Europe included the highlight of a face-to-face meeting with her WWII pen pal. Following Dad's retirement, together they explored the world from New Guinea to the Mediterranean. Tom passed away in 2018; they had been married 66 years. Throughout her life, Helen devoted much of her time to promoting and supporting her beloved Camp Wasewagan. She served as president of the Camp Wasewagan Alumni Association and worked with the Camp Fire Girl Council in many capacities. Her tireless work to improve the camp and to raise funds supporting Camp Wasewagan earned her multiple awards for outstanding service to Camp Fire Girls. Helen adamantly believed that the camp experience could be life-changing. Even as her physical condition declined with age, she was young again any time she had the opportunity to ascend the winding highway into the San Bernardino Mountains to that special place along the Santa Ana river. Helen served on several community improvement groups, was an officer of the Guild of La Vina Hospital and was a past president of the local League of Women Voters of Monrovia. She also worked on many civic issues including land use proposals for the Monrovia area. Helen is survived by her son Daniel Cloer and wife Laura (Visalia), daughter Julia Cloer and husband Sean Hulsey (Northridge), and granddaughters Madeline (Zach Souder, Denver) and Samantha Cloer (Vienna, Austria), great-grandson Jacob Souder, niece Carla Cloer (Porterville), and nephew Lane Starr (Athol, Idaho). She is also survived by six first cousins who dearly miss her. There will be no formal Memorial Service. Friends and family are invited to donate a no-kill pet shelter in her name.
