Judith BERGMAN Obituary
Judith Kimball "Judy" Bergman, 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara on August 19, 2018, with her family by her side.Judy was born on April 1, 1930, in Montclair, New Jersey, to Virginia and Lewis Kimball. She, her parents, and her brother, Kim, moved to Pasadena, California, in 1936.In 1951, Judy graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts with a degree in history. Shortly thereafter she returned to California and went to work for Caltech, where she met and married her husband of 65 years, Gunnar Bergman.Judy was a devoted mother of two children, Charlie and Ginny. After moving to Montecito in 1976, Judy began a decades-long career in real estate. She is also fondly remembered for her wonderful volunteer spirit as a member of the Pasadena Junior League and the Santa Barbara Music Academy of the West. With her dear friend Gay Bryant, Judy founded the annual Cate School Dog Dash, which ran from 1992 to 1994. Proceeds from the Dog Dash funded the Cate School Child Care Center, which today serves Cate School faculty and Carpinteria families.Apart from her family, Judy's great love in life was animals, which included her own nine dogs, three cats, and at least four dozen chickens.Judy's closest friend, Priscilla Flynn, captured Judy's spirit best when she said, "Judy was a pioneer woman. If she had been in a covered wagon heading west, she would have made any camp feel like home, she would have solved every problem, she would have been fearless, and she would have loved every minute of it."Judy is survived by her husband, Gunnar; her children, Ginny and Charlie; and her grandchildren, Lizzy, Andrew, Will, and Peter.Judy's life will be celebrated by family members in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations in Judy's name may be made to RESQCATS, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, care, and adoption of stray and abandoned cats and kittens: P.O.
