Lawrence E. Blakee Sr.

BLAKEE-Lawrence E. Blakee Sr., 79, born January 19, 1925 in Los Angeles, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2004 while traveling home after visiting family in Laughlin, Nevada. His beloved wife of 47 years, Jeanne, preceded him in death in 1994. He is survived by three children, Jean Anne Tur ner, Lawrence E. Blakee Jr., and Claudia Blakee; three granddaughters, Michelle Blakee, Mindy Holmes and Nicole Turner; and three great grandchildren, Brandon, Arianna and Cameron Holmes. Being deeply patriotic , Larry dropped out of high school and stretched his age in order to enlist in the Army Air Force early in 1942. He proudly served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theater with the 20th Air Division. In addition to his family and his country, Larry had a deep passion for both the work and those he worked with at Cal Tech in the Astro Physics Department for close to four decades. As a result of a field trip he took in the sixth grade to the Cal Tech optical shop where the 200 inch mirror for the Hale telescope was being polished, he had a life-long fondness for the telescopes at both Mr. Wilson and Mt. Palomar observatories which he worked tirelessly to maintain in optimum condition for the benefit of the astronomers who used them and the world who learned the secrets of the universe from them. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD WEDNESDAY, MAY 26TH AT 3:00 PM IN THE ROSE HILLS MEMORIAL CHAPEL, WHITTIER.
