GEORGE THOMAS KARNES (TOM), 76, passed away peacefully, on June 15,2015. He was surrounded by his family at his home. Tom was born in Hiawatha, W. Va in 1939 and was raised by his parents in Matoaka, W. Va. with his brother and sister. He attended West Virginia University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. In 1960, he married his wife of 55 years, Mary Faith Karnes (Suzie) and joined the Navy. He served for four years as a lieutenant jg. In 1964 he began working for Shell Oil Co. as a petroleum engineer. During his 30 year career with Shell Oil, he and his family lived in New Orleans, Houston, and Ventura, Ca. Tom and Suzie had 3 children, Kathy, Kelly, and Kyle. Tom retired from Shell Oil after 30 years and he and Suzie moved to Temecula, Ca. Three granddaughters were born after Tom retired. During retirement he enjoyed making stained glass windows and carving wooden birds. He also very much enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters. Tom and Suzie recently relocated to San Diego, Ca due to Tom's health needs. He is survived by his wife Suzie; his three children Kathy Garces (Fred Garces), Kelly Karnes, and Kyle Karnes (Gina Karnes); his three granddaughters, Audrey Garces and Marina and Sophia Karnes, and his siblings Ed Karnes and Claudia Nesbit (Robert Nesbit and Karen Nesbit). We already miss him, but we are thankful that he is in heaven and no longer sick. Tom's memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Linfield Christian School, 31950 Pauba Road Temecula, CA 92152. I am so sorry I can't be with you today to celebrate Tom's life. It is almost impossible to express just how important he was in my life. Through thick and thin, age difference and politics we sometimes didn't agree but I believe we had a strong bond. He always made me laugh and I will remember all those good times. Now he is at peace and is suffering no more. My prayers are with you now and always.
