M. Wylie Obituary

M. DEANE WYLIE
May 15, 1934 - January 30, 2018
M. Deane Wylie, of Riverside, CA, passed away peacefully at home, after a brief illness. Born to Dorothy Morton Wylie and Deane Alwyn Wylie in Berkeley, CA, Deane grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from UC Berkeley. He joined the first group of the Peace Corps in 1961, in answer to President John F. Kennedy's call for Americans to serve their nation and their world. There he met Carolyn Ekdahl, the love of his life, and they married in 1962 in the Philippines, where they taught English for the Corps. Deane later worked for the Peace Corps newspaper in Washington D.C. and then for the Food and Agricultural Organization of the U.N. in Rome, Italy, before returning to the U.S. to begin his long career in journalism. Over the years, he worked as a reporter and editor at the Fresno Bee, the Riverside Press Enterprise, the Long Beach Press-Telegram, as publisher of the Seal Beach Journal, and at the Los Angeles Times as an assistant editor on the Sunday Opinion section from 1979 to 1999, when he retired. Throughout his life, Deane gave generously of his time and efforts to everyone he met. After retirement, he worked as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate working with teens. He volunteered with the Wylie Center (a non-profit established in 1977 and renamed for his wife after her death in 2004), eventually serving on its board. The center provides services for children, youth and families in the Inland Empire. Deane also was very involved with the historic Mission Inn, working as a docent and serving on the board of the Friends of The Mission Inn. In recent years he also served on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at UC Riverside, as well as volunteering with the Interfaith Coalition for Refugee Families. Deane leaves his son, Adam, and daughter, Victoria Wylie West (Tim), and grandchildren Matthew and Julia. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. Donations may be made to the Carolyn E. Wylie Center for Children, Youth and Families. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 1:00 PM at the Historic Mission Inn.

We will always remember the day in 2003 when Deane and his late wife showed up at our door to welcome us to the neighborhood and offer their help in any way they could. Deane was such a kind and caring man and will always be remembered.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
