Donald Gerald Smith
Don Smith, 81, died Oct. 14, 2017, surrounded by family at his Menifee, CA home. Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Richard Smith and Marguerite Maroney, he attended the University of Washington on a basketball scholarship, served in the Marine Corps and retired while a sales manager for Prudential in Huntington Beach, CA. His loves included family, sports, (especially beach volleyball) and friends in the recovery community. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose (Binsted); children Laurie Fineman of Murrieta, CA, Cathy Kelly of Watsonville, CA and Richard E. Smith of Temecula, CA; sister Elaine Pierce of Boston; brother Rodney Hanks of Kobe, Japan; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His brothers, Richard E. Smith of New York and Kevin Hanks of Woodland Hills, CA died before him. Services are 11:45 a.m. Oct. 30 at Riverside National Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Palmilla Clubhouse, 29892 Fernleaf Drive, Menifee, CA.
