Aaltje "Alice" Schelling Obituary
AALTJE "ALICE" SCHELLING Alice met her Lord and Savior face-to-face on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the age of 93. What we only know in part this side of eternity, Alice now knows in full. Alice was born in Zuid-Beijerland, the Netherlands on December 2, 1919 to Peter and Hillitje van der Waal. Alice is a survivor of Nazi Concentration Camps having been imprisoned for approximately 18 months. Corrie ten Boom was one of her barrack mates during this time. On June 5, 1946, she married the love of her life, Rochus Schelling, who preceded her in death in 2000. In October 1956, Alice and Rook and their two sons left their beloved Holland and immigrated to the United States. They initially settled in Dairy Valley (Cerritos), California, working in the dairy business. In 1968, Rook and Alice purchased a chicken ranch in Perris, California where they resided until 1984. In 1984 they retired to Riverside. For the last 6 years of her life, Alice joyfully resided at Olive Grove Retirement Home in Riverside. Alice was a tireless worker who generously gave of herself to help those in need. She was a very loving and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. Her greatest love was to spend time with family and friends and enjoy all things "gezellig". She will be greatly missed by all. Alice is survived by her younger brother, Arie van der Waal (wife Rie), of Schagen, the Netherlands; her son Pete Schelling, (wife Marlys) of Bellflower, California; her son Rob Schelling (wife Kathy) of Riverside; Pete's children: Robbie (wife Cara), Jason (wife Angelica), David, (wife Karen), Lyndsay (fiance Henry), Haley (fiance Jonathon), Marlys' children: Kristie, Michael and Jenny Broesder, and Rob's children: Eric (wife Kimee), Joel (wife Ashley) and Leah (husband Andy). She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren. Burial will be private, but a memorial service will be held in celebration of Alice's life at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 10th at Hope Community Church, 9805 Colorado Avenue, Riverside. In lieu of flowers, the Schelling family requests that donations be made in Alice's honor to Hope Community Church. Our earthly loss is certainly heaven's gain, for our sadness is buoyed in the sure hope that we have in Christ Jesus. We look forward to sharing in the freedom and eternity what Alice now experiences as a reality.
