Alba Zampese-DeBenedet Obituary
ALBA ZAMPESE - DE BENEDET nee Ciabattoni, a long time resident of Grand Terrace, died in her home on 12/20/2014, shortly after celebrating her 97th birthday. She received excellent care at Loma Linda Hospital and at home by Companion Hospice of San Bernardino. Alba was born on October 30, 1917 in Lakewood, New Jersey. She married Ernie Zampese in Trenton, New Jersey, January 29, 1939. In 1946, she accompanied Ernie and his cousin, Bill De Benedet to Southern California, where starting from scratch and hard work, established Zampese and De Benedet Construction Company. With Alba's strong collaboration and support, they built hundreds of homes in the San Gabriel Valley and in 1954, led the development of Grand Terrace. In 1964, they built their home on Honey Hill. Alba lost her Ernie to cancer in 1987 and with Bill continued the business together. They later married on Valentine's Day, 1991. Sadly, Bill also passed away of cancer in 1998. Alba remained in her mountain home overlooking the Valley until she passed away. She leaves a brother, Alger Ciabattoni and wife Kathleen of San Francisco. A niece, Leigh Carlson, husband Jerry and son, Jonathan. A niece, Cynthia Blair of Modesto. Also, two cousins, Lena Caporusso and Joni Mitchell. In addition, she leaves many friends and family members locally as well as in other parts of the United States, Canada and Italy. Through the years, Alba traveled extensively in Europe, especially Italy. She kept in close contact with friends and relatives. Alba loved her home in Grand Terrace and always made people feel welcome. She was a superb Italian cook and a marvelous baker. She kept up on current affairs and in recent years started to learn Spanish by watching Spanish Television. Alba was involved in the community in various ways. She was a benefactor of Christ the Redeemer Church and The Children's Hospital of Loma Linda University. She also helped her dear friend, Sister Joan Marie Sasse with outreach seminars and retreats. They shared many precious moments preparing for these events. Funeral arrangements are by Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary. A service celebrating her life will be held at 1:30 pm on 12/30/2014 at Montecito Memorial Park, Valley View Chapel, 3520 East Washington Street, Colton, CA. Those wishing to honor her memory and in lieu of flowers, are encouraged to donate to The Children's Hospital of Loma Linda University.
