1918 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
ALFRED (FRED) S. FARRELL 5/18/1918 - 2/24/2016 Alfred Stanislaus Farrell (Fred Stanley Farrell), 97, of Riverside, CA, passed away on February 24, 2016, in Riverside, CA. The memorial service will be held at the Riverside BPO Elks Lodge, #643, 6166 Brockton Ave., Riverside, CA 92506 at 1:00 PM on Sunday, March 13, 2016. Fred was born in Lethbridge, Canada, on May 8, 1918 to parents Romeo C. Farrell and Athala La Rue, nee Farrell. He was one of six children. While Fred was still young the family moved to the Los Angeles area, Upon graduation of high school, Fred was employed by a local newspaper in the advertising and editorial departments and advanced to a management level. In 1942, Fred entered the United States Army and was assigned to the 36th Infantry Division. He rose to the rank of captain. Among other honors, during WWII, he received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. During the Korean Conflict, he earned a Bronze Star and Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars along with other meritorious recognitions. He was honorably discharged on July 7, 1955. Fred was married to Mary Lois Wallace, nee Farrell, on November 1, 1956, in Houston, Texas. They were married 25 years when she preceded him in death. In 1960, having relocated to California, Fred was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from which he retired in 1977 as a Manager of Station/Branch Operations. Fred was active in the Riverside BPO Elks Lodge #643 and was a valued member for 34 years. He served as the Exalted Ruler in 1988-89. From 1994-95 he served as the State Vice-President for the SE District and in 1996-1997 was District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, California, Southwest. He was an honorary life member, very involved in Lodge activities and still attended Lodge functions until his later years.
