Obituary Condolences

ALVERNA SPURGEON MESSICK Born in New Richmond, Ohio in 1922, Alverna Spurgeon Messick passed on Friday, November 2, 2012 in Alhambra, CA. Blessed with a magnetic personality and a heart full of love for everyone she met, Alverna was strongly rooted in a confident hope and faith in the Lord, a deep love for Earl, her husband of 72 years who passed in November 2011, her caring support for family and friends, and her deep relationships with Navajos in the Four Corners area of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado, where she and Earl partnered in ministry for 35 years. After marriage, Alverna and Earl attended Nyack Bible College in Nyack, New York and then traveled throughout the United States in full-time children's ministry called "The Christian Convoys." With her husband Earl, an accomplished accordionist, gospel magician, puppeteer, and church leader, Alverna was a wonderfully-gifted communicator and pioneer as a woman in church leadership ,whether speaking in children's meetings, preaching in churches, leading conferences and evangelistic meetings, or sharing about the Navajo ministry on Christian television. She also had a special heart for all children and many touched by her love came to think of her as their Mom or Grandma. A graduate of Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA, Alverna earned a master's degree in education at the University of California in Riverside. She and husband Earl taught elementary school in Harrison, Ohio, and in Colton and Riverside, CA; and then began a new and important call on their lives, to partner with and encourage Navajo Church leaders on the Navajo Nation. Alverna leaves a boundless legacy of people whose lives she has touched through sharing in deed and in word ,the Good News of the Gospel. She truly lived a joyful and faithful life, living each moment to its fullest. She leaves behind her very grateful children, Gloria Messick Svare and Fred Messick (daughter Karen Waltz passed in 2010), grandchildren Brenda, Brian, Ragnar Christian, Noah, and Muze, and great-granddaughter, Cora. Gifts in honor of Alverna Messick are suggested in the form of donations to: Earl & Alverna Messick Ministries, 30 Oak Knoll Gardens Drive, Pasadena, CA 91106. Messick Ministries is a nonprofit organization that continues to partner with Navajo pastors and church leaders on the Navajo Nation. Funeral services will be Saturday November 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., with visiting beginning at 9:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 101 S. Atlantic Ave., Alhambra, CA Cabot & Sons, Pasadena Directors.
