Amelia Ann Barnes Obituary
AMELIA ANN BARNES passed away peacefully on December 13, 2014. She was born in Lexington, MO in 1927 to Benjamin H. Johnson and Emma Lee Johnson. Amelia pursued nurse's training at St. Mary Provident Hospital School of Nursing, in Xavier, Kansas and graduated in 1953. She later worked at the Cleveland Clinic, where she was the first African-American nurse. While in Cleveland, Amelia met and married Gustav Barnes Sr., her husband of 55 years. She and Gus moved to Kansas City, Missouri and later to Southern California. Amelia and Gus were active members of the Center for Spiritual Living in Sun City for many years. Gus preceded her in death in May of 2010. Amelia was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children Ann (Chris), Cathy (Scott) and Gus Jr., by sisters Celestine Johnson and Betty J. Johnson, a host of nieces and nephews and grandchildren Erika, Allison, Gus III, Louis, Eric, Ashley and Asjah. Amelia was cared for until the end with love and generosity by the staff at Raincross at Riverside, Connections Unit, in Riverside, California. Services honoring Amelia's life will be held at Miller-Jones, 26770 Murrieta Rd. Sun City on December 20, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
