Angela Mary Matthews Obituary
ANGELA MARY MATTHEWS 03-13-1924 ~ 09-09-2015 At 91 years of age our mom, Angela Matthews, left on September 9, 2015, to reunite with her husband of 56 years, relatives and friends who had gone before her. Angela Mary Dole, born on March 13, 1924, was the youngest of four sisters born to Frank T. Dole and Cecilia (Werick) Dole, in Buffalo, New York. Growing up she had the advantage of trips to Niagara Falls and picnicking at Watkins Glen, plus enjoying the change of seasons. At the age of 5, she flew in an early Ford Tri-motor aircraft - a treat she experienced again at the age of 85, impressing the pilot by presenting her original boarding pass. Angela was working for Curtis Wright Air Craft when a handsome young man in an Army Air Corp uniform sought her out for a date. Bob (Bernard) George Matthews and Angela were married on October 14, 1944. Bob was stationed in Avon Park, Florida, where they set up home amid other service families who remained life-long friends. When Bob's military service ended he brought Angela to Riverside, CA, to start a career in the auto glass business, and their son Randy was born in 1947. Bob and Angela became homeowners in 1950 by winning a lottery for a new house in the first post-war housing development in Riverside, a home she resided in for 62 years. Angela and Bob enjoyed traveling in both the United States and abroad, and she often remarked that she had "visited" over 65 different airports and "survived" kissing the Blarney Stone. She continued traveling with good friends after Bob's death in 2001. Angela welcomed her new daughter-in-law, Marina, to the family in 1968. She happily embraced grandma-hood with the birth of Christopher Wayne and then, 22 months later, Brenton Eric. Much to Marina's delight, Angela and Bob contrived fun overnights with the boys which ranged from racing Randy's old model cars in the back yard and picnics in the park to special trips to Knott's Berry Farm, Disneyland and San Diego Wild Animal Park. When her grandsons married, she was just as welcoming to granddaughters-in-law Heather (Chris) and Olesya (Brent) . Over the years she enjoyed six great grandchildren: Ashton, Zahra, and Aliza Rae, of Eugene, OR, and Anthony, Leana, and Kaleya, of Odenton, MD. A truly heartfelt thanks goes to the staff and caregivers at Merrill Gardens Santa Maria, Coast Family Home Care, and Central Coast Hospice, for their devoted care of our mom, Angela. We know how much she felt loved by all. We will miss you, Mom, but know you've gone to be with Dad. We will see you in due time - Friends and relatives are invited to a Celebration of Angela's Life at Riverside National Cemetery, on December 28 at 10 AM.
